Description We are seeking dedicated Japanese interpreters to join our team at Aurora Public Schools. As a language interpreter, you will play a vital role in ensuring effective communication between families with limited English proficiency and school personnel. Your expertise will facilitate meaningful interactions, enabling families to actively participate in their child's educational journey. By providing accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation, you will empower families to make informed decisions and engage in their child's academic success.
Responsibilities
Provide consecutive interpretation services during meetings, conferences, and other school events, ensuring accurate and timely communication.
Build rapport and establish trust with families, creating a safe and supportive environment for effective communication.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interpretation assignments.
Collaborate with school staff, teachers, and administrators to understand the context and requirements of each interpretation assignment.
Adapt interpretation style to suit different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, ensuring clarity and cultural sensitivity.
Offer cultural mediation and explain cultural nuances to facilitate better understanding between families and school personnel.
Assist in translating written materials, such as school policies, consent forms, and educational resources, into Japanese.
Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance interpretation skills and stay updated with industry best practices.
Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor, representing Aurora Public Schools with integrity and cultural competence.
Qualifications
Fluent in both Japanese and English, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for a bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., linguistics, translation studies).
Certified or professionally trained as a language interpreter, with experience in consecutive interpretation.
Strong cultural competence and sensitivity, with the ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts.
Excellent active listening skills and the ability to accurately convey information between languages.
Proficiency in using interpretation equipment and technology, such as headsets and interpretation apps.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively, ensuring timely delivery of interpretation services.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for facilitating communication and understanding between diverse communities.
Willingness to continue professional development and stay updated with industry trends and best practices.
A valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to different school sites as needed.
