Job Description - 3617 Cutting Line Operator Mechanic I-Night Shift


  

Summary 

Sets up, maintains and repairs all equipment in the Cutting Department and for conveyors and pumps which move raw materials to and from cutting machinery (works in conjunction with maintenance personnel when necessary).

Duties and Responsibilities 

Essential Functions

Sets up, maintains and repairs machinery which cleans and cuts raw materials into relish, salad cubes, chips, strips, stuffers, etc. and which pricks whole pickles.

Rebuilds gearboxes, spindle assemblies, and other parts for all machines. Rebuilds conveyors and pumps.

Performs preventive maintenance on all machinery, conveyors, etc. in the department.

Operates controls for pumps and conveyors which transfer raw materials from the wet hopper to the inside cutting equipment. Operates controls for pumps or conveyors which move processed materials from the line to the tanks or to the packing department.

Notes and records information on machinery down time. Suggests to Lead Cutting Machinery Mechanic or Supervisor changes and modifications to improve department’s downtime.

Lubricates the cutting machinery being run on a daily basis as prescribed by the preventative maintenance logs.

Maintains operation of machines by replacing damaged spindles, blades, and needles. Will also keep on hand “built up” spares for quick change outs.

Ensures that all safety guards are in place on all equipment before equipment is operated.

Checks the condition of all cutter blades at prescribed times during the operation. Notes conditions and corrections made if they were necessary. This is to ensure proper product flow and quality of cut.

Assists on D.I.N. calls within the department, with the exceptions of welding and electrical work.

Monitors machine operations and reports problems/changes to Lead Cutting Machinery Mechanic or to Supervisor.

Follows safety rules and company policies.

Other duties  

Occasionally operates forklift in performance of some job duties.

Lifts and moves 50 pounds of pickles, onions, cabbage, carrots, etc.

Inspects and picks trash out of raw materials or processing line conveyor before the cutting machinery for relish, salad cubes and chips.

Participates in training, employee meetings, committees, project teams, etc. as appropriate.

Receives written instructions from packing schedule or verbal instructions from supervisor on above tasks and performs other work as directed by supervisor.


Requirements

  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

High school or equivalency needed. Additional trades training a strong plus. Mechanical aptitude required. Ability to speak, read and write English required. Required math skills include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. CRC (Bronze level or higher) a plus.

Machines, Equipment, Tools Used

Cutting machinery, pricking machine, pumps, hoses, conveyors, knife, pusher, forklift, all types of hand tools.

Physical Demands

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerate degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady forces in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.

Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a high position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and\or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform and activity such as: operates machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performs mechanical or skilled trade tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

Work Environment

Works inside and outside, subject to some seasonal temperature variations and frequent wetting of feet from job tasks. Fumes from hot pepper and chlorine. Hearing protection required because of machinery noise. Hair net and beard net required. Gloves and air mask required at times. Some contact with brine, chlorine, and oil. Safety goggles required when using some hand tools.
