Job Description - Academic Coach

Department: K-8 Faculty

Reports To: Head of School

FLSA Status: Exempt

Campus/School: Herron Preparatory Academy

Anticipated Start Date: July 28, 2025

Managing Employees: No 

Coaches provide instructional leadership for the assigned academic disciplines.  The Coaches report to the Herron Preparatory Academy (HPA) Head of School.  In this role, each Coach will be responsible for the following functions:

Lead the curriculum development and modification efforts for specific academic discipline to ensure the following:

  • Overall vision and delivery of curriculum aligns with HPA’s classical, liberal arts mission and the core values.
  • Curriculum complies with IDOE standards, when applicable.
  • Coordinate with teacher regarding High Ability requirements and programming
  • Curriculum reflects current best practices and developments in each academic discipline.   
  • Curriculum is properly aligned across all academic and grade levels.
  • Content delivery and measurement of students’ mastery is consistent when a specific class is taught by multiple teachers.
  • Lesson plans are aligned with HPA’s classical model, IDOE standards, and subject goals and objectives.
  • Mastery assessments are constructed to properly measure the learning process. 
  • Classroom practices provide the best possible opportunities for student learning and successful completion of required high–stakes testing.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain efficient and effective systems to monitor and enhance student mastery.
  • Monitor teachers tracking systems to ensure they are maintaining and using individual student data in order to inform their instruction
  • Monitor teachers’ gradebooks and analyze trends in grades and appropriate assignments
  • Ensure all teachers in assigned discipline maintain gradebooks that align with established grading philosophies.  
  • Ensure all teachers maintain digital classroom sites (e.g., Google Classroom, ClassDojo) that are consistent in content and are valuable tools for students and parents.
  • Work collaboratively with the Vice President of Academics and Head of School to evaluate teacher effectiveness and to provide instructional support and coaching to the teachers in an assigned department.
  • Recommend curriculum offerings and appropriate teacher assignments for each academic year.
  • Assist with the recruiting and hiring of new teachers.
  • Lead the onboarding process for new teachers by training them on Herron Classical Schools’ and HPA’s philosophies, methodologies, and systems.  Provide all support necessary to enhance the teacher’s ability to be successful at HPA.
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of professional development for teachers and staff, when requested.
  • Facilitate and lead teacher meetings for assigned subject. 
  • Facilitate and lead family support nights for assigned subject. 
  • Maintain inventories for and coordinate the purchase of textbooks, equipment, and consumable supplies.
  • Coordinate the completion and submission of records regarding student data, textbook accountability, end of school year processes, and other requested information and data.
  • Manage the department in a manner that promotes positive and productive relationships between students, parents, faculty, administration and other constituents.  
  • Inform the Executive Leadership Team of emerging issues as they relate to assigned disciplines.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 5 to 10 years teaching experience required, preferably in a culturally diverse school.
  • Experience leading groups and working in teams to achieve academic success.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  • Bachelors’ Degree required, Masters’ Degree preferred.

Compensation

$33-35k annually, depending on experience. Full-time benefits include health, dental, vision & life insurance; health savings account contributions, short-term & long-term disability, retirement contributions, paid vacation & sick days.
