Downeast Cider is the #1 hard cider brand in New England and #2 hard cider in the country. Our first batches of unfiltered cider were fermented in the dorms of Bates College, Maine. We're now a team of 231, with new roles opening across all departments.
We produce, package, and ship our products at the cider house in East Boston, which is also the location of our office, taproom, and seasonal outdoor bar.
Mission of the Role:
Take ownership of the preparation of the company's financial statements and reporting mechanisms. After some time in the role, there will be an opportunity to learn the finance function and work on a mix of accounting/finance.
Job Responsibilities:
Oversee the month end close process by maintaining the General Ledger, reviewing journal entries, bank reconciliations, and expense reports
Own the accounting policies and review the financial statements for compliance on a monthly basis
Maintain the cost model for standard costing, including a regular review of overhead and labor rates with the Operations team
Manage AP and AR - reviewing invoices issued by the accounting team, running AR and AP aging meetings, processing payments for AP
Manage the Federal/State Excise Tax Return filings and individual state shipment reports accurately and efficiently by monthly due dates.
Assist with annual insurance policy renewals and audits
Utilize professional skepticism and an analytical mind in daily work, looking for errors and suggesting ways to improve efficiency and spending
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have only technical accounting experience (i.e., no finance), ideally at Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG) with manufacturing company clients and/or experience working in accounting at a manufacturing company (Fortune 500 preferred). Nice to have is knowledge on revenue recognition and cost accounting as well as a CPA.
Measurement of Success:
30 day goals: Learn the business, take over AR/AP with limited oversight
60 day goals: Complete accounting policies for the financial statements, complete a detailed review of the cost model (standard costing), complete a detailed review of revenue recognition
90 day goals: Prepare and close month end with little input or changes from VP
