PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Hiring Salary: $81,634 - $134,606/annually

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Accounting Supervisor will be responsible for assisting with the supervision, planning, coordinating, and administering of the activities and operations of the Accounting Group within the Controller’s Office. In addition, the Accounting Supervisor will be involved in special projects to bring critical enhancements and improvements to the city’s financial operations.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
· Assists with the supervision, planning, coordinating, and administering of accounting staff including overseeing responsibilities and workloads as well as training and assistance.
· Assists with the city’s Financial, Single and SCFD Audits as well as any other audit-related reviews including the coordination/assignment of staff, meeting of audit due dates, and communications with the city’s external auditors on all audit related matters.
· Assists with the completion of the city’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) that meets GFOA standards.
· Assists with the review of journal entries, accounts payable batches, and payroll transactions that meet certain thresholds and/or of a complex nature as well as year-end entries, workpapers, and analysis.
· Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities for the Controller’s Office.
· Provides assistance, training, and support to all city staff on accounting related matters including the city’s automated financial accounting system of record.
· Responsible for specific items related to year-end and the ACFR including, but not limited to, GASB 34 entries and the ACFR Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A).
· Assists with grant management assistance including compliance to all city staff; includes updates and revisions to the city’s Grant Business Policy Memorandum (BPM), city procedures and processes including forms and templates, grant training, and use of the grant management component of the city’s automated financial accounting system.
· Plans, implements, and manages implementation of the city’s automated financial accounting system and assists with the improvement of the organization, processes, and reports, including financial element creation, as needed, to meet the needs of all system users.
· Plans, manages, develops, tests, and implements new financial accounting systems and systems modifications.
· Develops and monitors city-wide internal controls.
· Assists in the hiring, training, evaluating, and discipling of assigned staff.
· Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or directly related field with a major in accounting
Experience:
· At least five (5) years progressive responsible experience in a complex governmental or municipal finance and accounting environment including performing accounting month-end and year-end processes.
· At least three (3) years’ experience preparing and participating in the external financial audit process including the preparation of an ACFR.
· At least two (2) years’ experience providing supervisory support.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience in public accounting.
Knowledge:
· Strong comprehensive knowledge of governmental accounting including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and Federal Uniform Grant Guidance (UG).
· Interpreting and implementing policies and procedures including adoption of best practices.
· Knowledge of and research GASB standards to determine applicability to the city and oversees the implementation of standards as needed.
Skills:
· Strong experience in the application of complex accounting principles
· Strong interpersonal, analytical, and managerial skills
· Strong customer service skills
· Strong skills in reviewing work products of others for accuracy and completeness and providing training/guidance as necessary for correction of any errors
· Advanced skills in use of automated financial accounting systems
· Advanced skills in use of Microsoft products, especially Excel
Abilities:
· Establish and maintain strong effective working relationships both within the Department and across the city including all levels of management, citizens and elected officials.
· Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
· Understand complex accounting principles and apply them as needed.
· Plan and coordinate work priorities of self and others.
· Supervise, provide training and manage work and staff assignments to meet deadlines in a positive, constructive manner.
· Handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality as appropriate with tact and diplomacy.
· Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
· Active status as a Colorado Certified Public Accountant preferred but not required. Reciprocity may be considered if state of active license is commensurate with Colorado License requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
· Sedentary physical work that involves moving at least 10 pounds with or without assistance.
· Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
· Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees.
· Vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents.
· Written communication for preparing procedures and providing guidance and training.
· Hand/eye coordination for computer operation.
Work Environment:
· Works indoors primarily in a clean, comfortable environment
Equipment Used:
· Uses standard office equipment including telephone, computers, calculators, copiers and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and other menu driven software solutions used by the city.
· This role may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g., vehicle, cell phone, etc.) in the course of their employment.
