Job Description - ACS Trainer

Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is a non-profit, incorporated oil spill response cooperative whose current membership includes oil and pipeline companies that engage in or intend to undertake oil and gas exploration, development, production and/or pipeline transport activities on the North Slope of Alaska.



The Alaska Clean Seas Planning Department is looking to fill the ACS Trainer position at ACS Base located in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. This position is open to both internal and external applicants.



All qualified and interested applicants must complete the requirements of this posting prior to 5pm on the closing date of March 13th, 2026.



This position supports the delivery, coordination, and documentation of training programs for Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) personnel, North Slope Spill Response Team (NSSRT) members, and other oil spill response participants. Under the direction of the Training Coordinator and the general direction of the Planning & Development Manager, this position assists with preparing and conducting training sessions, maintaining accurate training records, supporting compliance with regulatory requirements, and participating in drills and response activities. The Training Specialist plays a hands-on role in ensuring responders have the skills, knowledge, and readiness to meet ACS and regulatory standards for oil spill response.

Essential Functions:


1.    Training Delivery & Support



  • Assist in delivering training programs through classroom instruction, hands-on exercises, and field drills.

  • Set up, operate, and maintain training equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Support subject matter experts and instructors in presenting technical content.

  • Provide coaching and guidance to trainees during practical exercises.


2.    Training Administration



  • Maintain accurate and timely training records in accordance with ACS policy and regulatory requirements.

  • Track training attendance, certifications, and expirations in the Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Prepare training materials, agendas, rosters, and post-training evaluations.

  • Assist in the scheduling and logistics of training events.


3.    Compliance & Standards



  • Support the Training Coordinator in ensuring all training aligns with current regulatory standards and ACS operational requirements.

  • Assist in gathering and organizing documentation for audits and regulatory reviews.

  • Stay familiar with industry standards and recommended practices relevant to oil spill response training.


4.    Emergency Response Support



  • Participate in spill response exercises and actual responses as directed.

  • Provide on-site training and responder support during incidents.

  • Assist in the setup and execution of emergency drills, including equipment deployment and safety monitoring.


5.    Equipment & Facility Readiness



  • Inspect, maintain, and inventory training-related tools, equipment, and PPE.

  • Ensure training facilities, classrooms, and yards are clean, safe, and ready for use.


6.    UAS and Miscellaneous Functions



  • Support Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) training activities as directed by the Training Coordinator.

  • Provide administrative and field support for Incident Management Team (IMT) training events.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Qualifications:


Education & Experience



  • Associate's degree in Environmental Science, Safety Management, or an industry-related field. (equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of this degree).

  • Certified Trainer preferred (e.g., Certified Environmental Trainer, OSHA Authorized Trainer).

  • Minimum five (3) years of experience in oil spill response or environmental management, or equivalent experience in a related industry (e.g., regulatory or oil and gas/construction services) with at least one (1) year in a training role.

  • Experience in training development with a proven track record of successful program design and implementation.

  • Current Part 107 remote pilot license (or ability to obtain within six (6) months).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Experience delivering or assisting with technical or safety training preferred.

  • Familiarity with oil spill response equipment, tactics, and safety procedures.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with LMS software preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.


Physical requirements



  • Must meet the physical requirements for a qualified spill responder, including but not limited to:

    • Lifting up to 70 lbs

    • Pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs

    • Carrying up to 50 lbs

    • Shoveling up to 20 lbs



  • Ability to wear and work in a respirator as required.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboarding. Occasional walking, standing, squatting, bending, and twisting.

  • Ability to meet DOT and HAZWOPER physical requirements.

  • Fine and gross motor skills for equipment handling.


Working Conditions



  • This position is assigned to the North Slope and typically operates on a 2-weeks-on / 2-weeks-off rotational schedule, working 12-hour shifts, seven days per week. While on-site or assigned to temporary projects, the position is on-call 24/7. Flexibility in schedule and shift length is required to meet operational demands.

  • The employee may be recalled at any time for spill response or other emergencies.

  • Work is performed in Arctic conditions, often outdoors in extreme cold. Arctic-rated personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided.

  • Position may require extended travel over unpaved roads or tundra, and on uneven or icy terrain.

  • The role involves handling hazardous materials and waste.

  • Dress code must meet professional and North Slope operational standards.

  • ANSI-approved hard-toe safety footwear required when on the North Slope.
