Job Description

Position: Admin Director of Surgical Services
Location:  San Antonio, Texas
Department: Perioperative Services / Operating Room

Position Summary

The Administrative Director, Operating Room (OR) is responsible for the strategic planning, leadership, organization, and operational management of one or more perioperative departments on a 24/7 basis. This role oversees clinical operations, financial performance, staffing, quality initiatives, regulatory compliance, and continuous performance improvement while ensuring exceptional patient care and operational excellence.

The Administrative Director partners with physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes, optimize departmental performance, and foster a culture of accountability, service excellence, and employee engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations



  • Provide 24-hour operational leadership for assigned perioperative department(s).

  • Develop departmental goals aligned with organizational strategic objectives.

  • Direct daily operations to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

  • Lead strategic planning, workflow optimization, and operational improvements.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Promote collaboration across departments to improve operational efficiency and patient outcomes.

  • Serve as a visible leader and resource for staff, physicians, patients, and leadership.

  • Anticipate operational risks and implement proactive solutions.

Financial Management



  • Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating and capital budgets.

  • Optimize resource utilization while maintaining quality patient care.

  • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements.

  • Oversee purchasing, maintenance, and replacement of departmental equipment.

People Leadership



  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain high-performing clinical leaders and staff.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and competency assessments.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership development.

  • Address employee concerns proactively while fostering a positive work environment.

  • Manage employee relations, including counseling, disciplinary action, and performance improvement.

  • Promote employee engagement and reduce staff turnover.

Quality & Performance Improvement



  • Lead departmental quality improvement initiatives.

  • Monitor key performance indicators and quality metrics.

  • Utilize data analysis and performance dashboards to drive operational improvements.

  • Conduct root cause analyses for high-risk events and implement corrective actions.

  • Support patient safety, infection prevention, and risk management initiatives.

  • Ensure readiness for regulatory surveys and accreditation reviews.

Clinical & Physician Collaboration



  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Ensure timely availability of patient information to facilitate clinical decision-making.

  • Support case management initiatives and clinical excellence programs.

  • Promote patient-centered care and service excellence throughout the department.

Technology & Systems

Working knowledge of:



  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems

  • HED

  • HPF

  • STAR

  • HEV

  • Accudose

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Qualifications

Required Education



  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)

Preferred Education



  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN), Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Administration, or related field

Required Experience



  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in the Operating Room or perioperative services.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership or management experience within the Operating Room.

Preferred Experience



  • 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible senior management experience in perioperative services.

Licensure

Required



  • Current Texas Registered Nurse (RN) License

Preferred



  • CNOR or other perioperative specialty certification

  • Nursing Administration or Leadership Certification
