POSITION TITLE: Adult Learning Coordinator II

DEPARTMENT: Adult Learning Center GRADE: 4 FLSA: Non-Exempt FTE: 1.0

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provides Adult Learning Services to patrons

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Head of Adult Learning

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

BENEFITS:

This full-time position includes a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and supplemental insurance coverages as well as HRA and retirement savings. Benefits include vacation and sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.

WAGE: $18.15-24.09 per hour DOE

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Administrative Functions: Administers daily operations of the Adult Learning Center Central office and classes located at this site. Maintains schedule of class times and locations. Evaluates current Adult Learning Center systems, policies, and procedures and proposes and implements opportunities for growth and development.
  • Grant writing and maintenance functions: Assists the program supervisor with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate to the objectives of the department, including drafting policies and procedures for grants after they have been awarded to the program. Serves as Secondary Contact on all grant submissions. Performs duties as determined by the program manager as the Adult Learning Center to ensure optimal implementation of grant requirements.
  • Liaison leader for tutors: Leads volunteer tutor training, class start-up, and follow-up. Coordinates the periodic training of new volunteer tutors. Collects data from tutors regarding student hours and prep time. Inputs tutor information into database. Assists with recognition of volunteer tutors.
  • Service to students: Meets and assists potential and continuing ALC students. Conducts enrollment interviews and pre- and post-test assessments. Collects requisite intake forms from enrolling and returning students. Scores student assessments. Inputs student information and posts student assessment scores into database. Collaborates with ALC Team to place adult learners in appropriate classes or in individual instruction. Teaches one or two classes a week to alleviate the needs of the student waiting list, comprised mainly of English Language Learners. Substitute teaches a class if necessary. Coordinates online high school program applications, interviews, and assignments. Proctors assessments.
  • Adult Learning office operations and outreach: Assists Head of Adult Learning in the creation of new classes or the expansion of existing classes. Helps Head of Adult Learning provide community outreach by promoting library and Adult Learning Center programs and developing partnerships with businesses, educational entities and human services organizations. Assists in the planning, coordination, and function of Culture Fest, Hispanic Heritage Month, Tutor Appreciation, and Student Recognition.
  • Self-development: Keeps up-to-date on Library affairs. Attends monthly staff meetings and training; attends weekday What’s Up meetings, attends internal and external trainings as requested, stays aware of Library and Department changes via email, the Library website, and the staff wiki.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested: Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives. Participates in projects that improve Library functionality.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS CONTINGENT UPON CONTINUED FUNDING FROM AEFLA GRANT:

  • Secondary Program Contact: Creates and coordinates classroom reservations and maintains an updated class schedule. Develops and communicates new policies and/or procedures with Adult Learning staff as necessary. Inputs students and test results into LACES as necessary. Oversees intake and testing sessions for new students.
  • Accessible Design Coordinator: Creates and enforces the protocol to address barriers to education within the program. Coordinates with local agencies, such as the Mesa County Workforce Center, Vocational Rehab, and the Mesa County Judicial System, to remove barriers that hinder students from attending or participating in classes. Develops and maintains a list of local resources that can assist individuals with barriers to education or employment. Communicates student barriers to education with appropriate staff members to ensure program staff are creating an environment where students are capable of learning. Connects Adult Learning Instructors to resources that enable them to feel confident working with students with barriers to education and/or employment.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • ESL, EFL, TEFL, or TOEFL Certification preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with adult learners preferred.
  • Education and training associated with completion of: a two-year college, vocational, or technical program, or three (3) years related education in the fields of English, Linguistics, adult education, and/or ESL, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate proficiently in Spanish preferred
  • Proficiency in written communication
  • Ability to use word processing software at least 30 wpm
  • Knowledge of database management and other software programs, such as MS Office and Google Drive
  • Skills necessary to organize, plan, schedule and implement successful events
  • Ability to communicate verbally with public and co-workers in person and on the telephone
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Ability to transport self to other locations in a timely fashion

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally
  • Ability to maneuver about the library campus in a timely fashion
  • Ability to read a minimum print size equal to 10 point
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Subject to frequent interruptions.

SCHEDULE:

  • Unpaid meal break of at least ½ hour per shift to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to be available to work flexible hours to cover unplanned staffing shortages.
