Job Description - Adult Services Librarian - Digital Services (FT - 37.50 Hrs/Wk)

Description

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an on-site Adult Services Librarian for our Digital Services. To join our team, this individual must be a collaborative, service-oriented professional who understands the cutting edge and future forecast of technology. Some of the responsibilities of this position include: acting as the primary point of contact for all digital services and resources, providing patrons with tech instruction 1-on-1 and in a group setting, and curating our digital collections through appropriate platforms. Additionally, they will work on the shared reference desk and bring their expertise on outreach efforts to the general population and senior living communities. This position will also maintain content related to Adult and digital services on the library's website. The salary range for this position is approximately $20.11-$25.13/hour DOQ.

This position includes most daytime hours, with evenings as needed and weekends on a rotating basis, depending on departmental and community engagement needs.

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, provides reference, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance and instruction services for patrons of all ages. Participates in collection development and assisting in the evaluation of the adult 

collection. Contributes to the planning and implementation of programs and services to adult patrons. The Adult Services Manager will assign specific responsibilities/functions based on experience, skills, and the department’s specific needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Performs all aspects of a Library Associate position.
  • Participates in the development of the adult collections by selecting, weeding, and assisting in the evaluation of the adult collections for balance and comprehensiveness.
  • Performs complex searches in multiple databases.
  • Provides a broad range of professional library services, including reference and readers’ advisory services.
  • Assists in training new staff members within the department.
  • Attends appropriate professional meetings at the local, state, and national levels and seeks opportunities to improve and enhance library services.
  • Curates content, including digital resources and special collections, to meet adult patron needs and interests.
  • May participate in the development of departmental and/or library budgets.
  • May be responsible for administering one or more budget items.
  • May create content for the library's website and social media channels/networking sites and maintain these platforms.
  • May communicate and cooperate with assisted living facilities, local community organizations that serve the adult community, institutions of higher education, and local businesses.
  • Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.

Digital Services Librarian - specialized tasks include:

  • Liaisons with vendors to select appropriate licensed digital resources for the Library's collection and services, including but not limited to databases, e-material platforms, software, hardware, digital devices, and streaming services for all ages.
  • Assists in the collection development of circulating e-materials, physical audiovisual materials, and devices.
  • Successfully implements digital services, resources, and devices by acquiring contracts, setting up and testing services, being the primary contact for service issues, and maintaining services when required.
  • Collaborates with the marketing department and public services staff to promote library digital resources, devices, and services in person, on the website, on social media, and through print materials.
  • Creates and delivers instruction and training on digital services, devices, and resources to patrons, staff, and community members through various means, including print materials, one-on-one technical help, group training, programs, information sessions, and online tutorials. 
  • Supports library staff in providing patrons with advanced user instruction on digital services, devices, and resources.
  • Creates and maintains displays of digital resources, services, devices, and materials on various platforms.
  • Creates and maintains webpages on the library website related to Adult Services, applicable digital services and resources, including but not limited to: information, links, photos, accessibility, interactivity, and more. 
  • Tracks and reports information on digital resources, devices, services, and users, including budget, expenses, collection size, usage metrics, and user experience feedback. 
  • Keeps current on emerging technologies, digital resources, devices, and services through various networking and professional development resources. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May supervise volunteers

Qualifications:

  • MLS (MLIS) degree required (or equivalent education and relevant public library experience).
  • 2+ years of library experience is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient technology skills, including: Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, eReaders/tablets, online video conferencing/sharing platforms, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to high-quality reference and readers’ advisory practices and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the recreational and educational needs of today’s adult community.
  • Experience with automated library circulation and bibliographic systems (ILS) and OCLC.
  • Knowledge of current, popular reading, viewing, and listening interests of the population served.
  • Flexible and adaptable to new experiences, concepts, and technology.
  • Able to complete detailed work accurately, efficiently, and on time with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work independently or as a team member.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of professional library services and library trends.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments independently or as a team.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish, Polish, or American Sign Language) are desirable.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see.  
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach with hands and arms, get down on floors, climb stools, and perform other physical tasks.
  • Repeated movements with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while using a keyboard.
  • Employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time of work, including possible extreme hot and cold weather.
  • The noise level is generally similar to that of an office environment, but it may be loud at times.
  • The employee will occasionally lift or move up to 35 pounds and push or pull carts up to 150 pounds.
