Job Description - Advanced Practice Clinician


POSITION SUMMARY 

The Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) support’s the mission, goals and strategic plan of The Donor Network by evaluating potential organ donor referrals, medically managing organ donors, allocating donated organs, and completing moderately complex procedures on brain dead donors. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Essential Functions Statement(s) 

• Performs moderately complex testing with portable bedside laboratory devices in accordance with CLIA standards.

• Performs moderately complex procedures  under the guidance of the Medical Director. 

• Manages donor during organ recovery to include hemodynamic management, medication therapy, and ventilation. 

• Provides real-time clinical and administrative expertise and oversight aimed at maximizing donation during the referral and recovery processes for organ cases.

• Maintains the highest standards of professional conduct and interpersonal relationship development, promoting a positive and collaborative work environment.

• Completes referral evaluations for the purpose of determining organ and tissue donor suitability based on the OPO, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), OPTN/UNOS, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and recommendations.

• Completes hospital medical record review, including history of present illness and past medical history, the presence of past or present malignancies, and all surgical interventions/treatments.

• Collaborates with hospital staff to evaluate and physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function.

• Understands and complies with procedural aspects and requirements of blood, culture and typing specimen collection and labeling.

• Reviews and documents required information within the donor record, including labs, diagnostics, and procedural records.

• Ensures that donated organs are allocated in an efficient, equitable, and timely manner in accordance with the OPO and OPTN/UNOS policies.

• Ensures organs and tissue will be recovered and preserved to maximize utilization in accordance with the OPO and OPTN/UNOS policies.

• Complies with the OPO and OPTN/UNOS policies regarding documentation, maintenance, and confidentiality of records.

• Participates in process improvement and data development projects, including case reviews and research opportunities.

• Contributes to interdepartmental training and education, including preceptorship, case study presentation, and learning event participation.

• Fulfills additional individual and departmental directives, obligations, and responsibilities, as designated.  

• Employees must adhere to and remain in full compliance with the OPO’s Motor Vehicle Driving Policy as outlined in the Motor Vehicle Records and Driver Safety policy PC.334.


Requirements

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Education: Associate degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedic medicine, related biological science (including human donation science), or medical school degree (including foreign degree programs) required. Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science preferred.
Experience: Critical care experience or organ donor management experience preferred.
Computer Skills: Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) preferred. Microsoft Outlook preferred. Electronic medical records (e.g., Cerner, Epic, Meditech) preferred.
Certificates & Licenses: Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) preferred. License/certification in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science preferred. CPTC required within 18 months of employment.
Other Requirements: Ability to fulfill on-call obligations; case work up to 24 consecutive hours.     

Other Physical Requirements: Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (e.g., face shield, safety glasses, goggles, disposable surgical gloves, shoe covers, sterile gowns, etc.).
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Non-smoking office and hospital setting.
