Job Description - Advanced Registered Nurse Medical Imaging

Job Description:

The Advanced Imaging RN is a highly skilled nurse capable of supporting all modalities within the Medical Imaging Services Department. They are experienced and competent in the principles and practices of radiology, in addition to nursing. This position performs procedures (i.e., scrubs with the Radiologist, places PICC or IJ central lines) and is proficient in a broad spectrum of interventional techniques. Responsible for Imaging nursing services in multiple departments/facilities. These accountabilities include providing staff leadership, resource allocation, responding to emergencies, and providing critical care as needed throughout the service center.

Available only at facilities with Comprehensive Stroke Certification or designated Thrombectomy Stroke Centers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice.  Valid compact licenses must be transferred to the state of practice within 60 days of the start of employment.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified). 

  • RNs hired or promoted into this role must obtain their BSN within four (4) years of their hire or promotion date.  If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.*

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers.

  • Facility specific certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) upon hire or within specified timeline determined by service line and department guidelines.

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification

  • Demonstrated understanding of basic x-ray principles and practices.

  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and critical care or emergency nursing expertise.

*Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required as of the job description's last update in July 2025. Employees hired or promoted prior to this date will be held to the minimum requirements that were in place at the time of their promotion or hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.

  • National certification in the following area(s): RNCB/CRN, RCIS, VA-BC.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling stretchers/beds and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May need to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time, while wearing a lead apron (up to 15lbs)
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
