Job Description - Advising Specialist, Liberal Arts HV-NTP-AdvEssF25


Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. HVCC offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Hudson Valley is one of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and serves nearly 9,000 students each year. The college is a recognized leader in career and transfer preparation, workforce training initiatives, distance learning and service to a diverse population of students. Hudson Valley has an extension center in Malta, NY known as HVCC North and sponsors the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center in Troy, NY. Department of Education & Social Sciences 


In order to be considered an applicant for this position you must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in this announcement. HVCC does not support Visas. Applicants must currently hold an unrestricted employment authorization to work in the United States and appointment will be contingent upon completion of a background check.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts discipline, education, counseling or related field. Experience in counseling or advisement at the post-secondary level and previous experience with academic advising.  Experience in programs/activities to support academic success or teaching at the post-secondary level. Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with college students, and faculty. 


Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field. College advising experience in liberal arts disciplines. Experience using college academic software systems such as Banner and Degreeworks. 


Nature and Scope of Duties:
The Advising Specialist, reports to the Department Chair or his/her and their designee, and performs the following duties:


•    Provides academic advisement to students in all programs within the Department.
•    Advises students on career objectives, transfer opportunities and program choice.
•    Assists students in the selection and scheduling of courses.
•    Evaluates transfer credit in coordination with appropriate Department Chairperson.
•    Advises students of the impact of scheduling decisions on financial aid and academic standing.
•    Provides assistance to students seeking course withdrawal, termination, cross-registration and curriculum change.
•    Refers students to available student development and academic support resources
when appropriate.
•    Participates in academic activities within the department of Education & Social Sciences when appropriate.
•    Maintains working knowledge of College services, policies and procedures affecting the
academic success of the student.
•    Works collaboratively with other advisors to develop in-person and web-based tools to assist students with the advisement and registration process.
•    Maintains appropriate records of student advisement sessions
•    Performs all other related duties as assigned.
•    May be assigned to any other campus area in need of advisement. 


This is a 12-month, Full-Time position with a salary range of $44,000-$47,000.
