Job Description - After School Enrichment: Youth Leader
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the After School Enrichment Coordinator, the After School Enrichment Youth Leader is responsible for the direct supervision of program participants, and for the daily implementation of after school program activities. The Youth Leader collaborates with other team members and families to provide participants with academic support, enrichment activities, and other activities that increase student skill building, encourage healthy choices and behaviors, promote diversity and equity, support youth voice and leadership, and increase overall academic achievement. The Youth Leader position requires high energy, dedication, patience, and a strong desire to mentor youth, strengthen families, and serve the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Actively supervises program participants, ensuring their guidance and safety at all times
Assists in the planning, management, and implementation of age-appropriate program activities that engage students in active and meaningful experience.
Work closely with school administration and afterschool program staff to ensure effective communication.
Provide positive behavior guidance that supports the developmental, social-emotional, and physical needs of all students
Perform daily duties that ensure space is properly maintained, organized, clean, and safe
Respond to critical incidents and follow processes and procedures for Ouch Reports, Incident Reports and/or emergencies
Lead sports, games and curriculum activities, monitor youth behavior, and perform general housekeeping responsibilities
Educate students on safety protocols while riding in the vehicle and encourage respectful behavior toward peers.
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 18+ years of age
Possess a high school diploma/GED; one year or more of college preferred.
Previous experience working with children, preferably in a before or after school or day camp setting.
Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: mentoring, arts & crafts, homework assistance, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training prior to working with program participants
CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
American Red Cross
American Heart Association
American Safety & Health Institute
SCHEDULE & SEASONS
This position is a seasonal role, which runs adjacent to SMMUSD school calendars. On non-school days, Youth Leaders will have the option to work "Mini Day Camps" which requires employees to work 8-hour days. This position will end June 12, 2026. Youth Leaders will have the option to apply for Summer Camp as a Camp Youth Leader.
