ABOUT CJA

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice.  CJA is the City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof.  CJA utilizes procedural justice practices to provide pretrial services to over 100,000 people arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency’s internal and externally shared database systems, which are used to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues and potential reforms to criminal justice policy in New York City. CJA’s programs operate in the criminal courts and detention facilities 24 hours a day seven days a week within the 5 boroughs of NYC, employing over 280 employees, citywide. 

PROGRAM SUMMARY 

CJA operates a Supervised Release Program in Queens Criminal Court for defendants of all ages who are charged with felonies and misdemeanors, and who present a substantial likelihood of detention, but are at risk of failing to appear in court if released on recognizance. 

The program, which operates during the day and night court, screens targeted defendants for release, subject to specific conditions including maintaining face-to-face and telephone contact with the program, participating in a screening protocol for substance abuse and mental health issues, and agreeing to program monitoring and reporting of non-compliance, re-arrests and scheduled court appearances. 

POSITION SUMMARY 

Reporting to the Associate Director of Clinical Services I for ICM, and under the direction of the Associate Director of Clinical Services II for ICM, the Aftercare Clinical Supervisor is a dynamic, knowledgeable and experienced individual with a social service, psychology, or clinical background to help drive  impact on the ever-changing role of the court system and alternative diversion initiatives aimed at reducing detention and recidivism  in the city. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Aftercare Clinical Supervisor’s job functions include: 

Client Needs Assessments: 

• Lead the Aftercare ICM team, in collaboration with QSRP Leadership.  

• Provide clinical and administrative supervision to the Aftercare ICM team.  

• Be a leader in executing consistent cross-team communication between the ICM team, Aftercare team, and Court Based Social Worker team.  

• Collaborate with CJA’s leadership teams to build and pilot the Aftercare ICM model expanding roles and programming. 

• Provide support to a very small number of participants with the highest level of need, in the office and in the community.  

• Function collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of Social Workers, Case Managers, Behavioral Health Specialists, CASACS, and Peers to enhance the effectiveness of the program.  

• Provide crisis intervention and mediation of client conflict.  

• Ensure the transition from ICM programming to Aftercare services is seamless, including but not limited to facilitating case conferences and warm handoffs between the team members.  

Client Centered Management and Communication   

• Communicating and coordinating with staff comprised of diverse identities, experiences, and professional disciplines in a respectful manner that acknowledges differences, expertise, and experiences to promote cohesion, collaboration and better client outcomes.  

• Communicating with clients of diverse populations, needs, and experiences in the legal system and other institutions, in a respectful manner that acknowledges lived experiences, trauma, systemic fears, and creates connection.  

• Answering questions about our services in an informed and well-resourced way. 

• Utilize clinical knowledge and expertise to ensure that clients are being supported in a trauma-informed way.  

  Influencing and Motivating  

• Ability to work intensively with clients using trauma-informed interventions to enhance engagement in the program.  

• Supporting the client’s self-efficacy by reinforcing their power to make the changes that they want.  

• Clearly and concisely communicating with other members of the court and office-based teams to understand and support the needs and goals of the client and collaborate on appropriate next steps.  

Qualifications 

• LCSW, LMSW, or LMHC with 3+ years of related experience working with SMI or SUD adults and adolescents, required 

• At least one year of experience providing social services in the community required. Knowledge of NYC Court and Operations, required. 

• At least one year of supervisory experience, preferred.   

• Experience using readiness models and criteria to evaluate a client’s “readiness” to address their goals and/or behavioral changes. 

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following knowledge, skills and experiences:  

• Experience providing therapeutic services to people experiencing mental illness, homelessness, and/or substance use disorders as well as experience with  adolescents and young adults.  

• Familiarity with Alternative to Detention (ATD), and Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) or other advocacy program models.  

• Knowledge of treatment programs (substance use, mental health, etc.) and other support services (GED, job training, YIP, etc.) for referrals.  

• Experience with facilitating and maintaining relationships with community resource organizations. 

• Ability to exercise sound and quick judgement.  

• Excellent communication and writing skills.  

• Excellent time management skills.  

• Computer literacy with the ability to quickly adapt to changing technology.  

• Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours, as needed.  

• Knowledge of Evidence Based Practice techniques, including but not limited to Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, DBT, and CBT.  

• Experience documenting client progress in an Electronic Health Record System.  

• Willingness and ability to travel within the 5 boroughs.  

• Bilingual, a plus.  

• Internal candidates must be in good standing to be considered.  

Location: Kew Gardens, NY  

Salary: $ 96,309.46 

Note: This position is expected to operate in the community and in the office on a 5 days  week in-person schedule.  The successful hire must be able to assume responsibilities that are both community based and on-site, in accordance with CJA policy at the time of hire, this includes access to your own personal computer, laptop or tablet, and internet, until company devices can be issued.
