A Day in the Life as an Agency Maintenance Technician:

As an Agency Maintenance Technician you’ll work as part of a team to provide maintenance services throughout the agency as assigned, including agency offices and affordable housing properties including grounds and facilities maintenance of housing properties, both interior and exterior, as well as maintenance equipment, building security, and the safety of staff and visitors. The Agency Maintenance Technician receives and responds to requests for maintenance during and potentially outside of normal scheduled hours. Your day will involve: 

  • Providing customer service to agency staff, participants, tenants, and vendors relative to their facility needs, and will build sustainable relationships of trust through open and interactive communication;
  • Receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching maintenance requests;
  • Performing preventive maintenance on equipment and buildings;
  • Performing painting tasks such as: preparing surfaces for painting by patching plaster holes, sanding, scraping or masking; painting with brushes, rollers or sprayers; performing touch-up painting after work in an area; spot painting metal surfaces for corrosion control, etc.
  • Maintaining grounds by selecting the proper tools, implements and/or equipment to perform a variety of tasks, such as pruning shrubs and trees, re-seeding bare spots in lawns, fertilizing the grounds, mowing the lawns and other tasks associated with ground maintenance;
  • Performing carpentry work such as: hanging doors and installing windows, replacing/repairing door and window hardware, re-glazing windows, installing and/or repairing cabinets and handrails; repairing roofs, gutters and downspouts; replacing floor tiles and repairing carpet; and patching plaster walls and ceilings.

Requirements

Qualifications to be an Agency Maintenance Technician:

To excel in this role, you’ll need: 

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalency credential. Post-secondary education in building trades preferred. 
  • Experience: Three years of experience in building maintenance management, including experience with building systems and grounds maintenance. 
  • Skills: Ability and skill to use hand and power tools as well as maintenance equipment, be highly flexible and responsive to change, a creative problem solver and able to work independently.
  • Characteristics: Well organized, able to prioritize tasks and follow through.
  • Technical: Knowledge of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems, knowledge of electrical, plumbing and construction of commercial buildings. Advanced knowledge of effective safety standards, practices and procedures

Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required, as some travel within the community may be necessary.
