Job Description - Airport Line Operator

Dept/Div:  Airport/N/A                                                                                                                          FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt


General Definition of Work


Performs semiskilled work conducting maintenance on airport runways, runway lighting, and surrounding grounds, operating fuel trucks and fueling airplanes, providing assistance to the general public, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Airport Operation Manager.

Essential Functions


Monitors, repairs, and maintains the City Airport grounds; mows lawns and trims hedges; shovels and plows snow seasonally.


Performs weekly inspections on runways and runway lighting equipment; removes debris and ensures runways are clear; repairs runways and replaces lighting equipment as needed.


Operates and maintains airplane fuel trucks; performs re fueling maintenance on gas and jet powered airplanes, and helicopters; fills the fuel trucks as needed.


Operates radio communication equipment to inform pilots of flying conditions and related equipment readings.


Assists the general public with inquires by phone, email, and in person; directs inquires to appropriate resource as needed; arranges car rentals and charter flights as requested.


Monitors, maintains, and repairs assigned equipment; performs general office maintenance; cleans and repairs plumbing and electrical fixtures as needed.


Performs general hanger maintenance; moves airplanes to and from hangars as needed.


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Knowledge of airport operations and maintenance processes; knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to aviation; knowledge of basic maintenance equipment, fuel trucks, snow plows, and aircraft wheel horses; knowledge of fueling procedures for both gasoline and jet-powered airplanes and helicopters; knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare/complete all required reports within departmental deadlines; skill in the use of personal computer and position specific hardware and software; ability to safely maintain and operate assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment; ability to quickly and accurately compute and perform arithmetic operations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, consultants, supervisors, and the general public.


 


Education and Experience


High School diploma or GED and minimal experience operating light equipment and vehicles and assisting with landscaping and fueling operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


 


Physical Requirements


This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting, tasting or smelling and lifting and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and working with explosives, frequently requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).


 


Special Requirements


Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.
