Americorps Service Member - Community Nutrition Assistant

General Statement of Duties: In support of the mission of The Ohio Association of Foodbanks, members of the Healthy Harvest Corps will support a coordinated statewide effort to prioritize investments in scaling and sustaining food as medicine initiatives. Members will support new, emerging, and expanding services that address hunger as a social determinant of health.

Service Position Type/ Required Minimum Service Hours: FT/1700 hours

General Service Schedule: Our agency’s standard hours range from 7am – 5pm M-F. The member’s typical work schedule will be: eight hours/day with 30-minute lunch, M-F (with occasional weekend events). General breakdown of your time is below.

• 50% Healthy Eating Research (HER) Guidelines and Supporting Wellness and Pantries (SWAP) activities 

• 40% Support pantry and kitchen operations at the Healthy Choice Market 

• 5% Training at service site

• 5% Training and events through the Community Health and Research team

Primary duties (minimum 50% of members time):

• Participate in monthly Foodbank Champions Team calls with the network 

• Utilize the HER and SWAP Toolkit on the OAF Member Portal to execute a phased approach to HER guidelines and SWAP implementation. For example, by executing one or more of the phases listed below:

      o  Phase 1: Raise awareness and increase knowledge level of HER and SWAP among foodbank staff through internal training and other education. Do work to increase readiness for HER and/or SWAP internal implementation.

      o  Phase 2: Rank easy, rule of thumb items (no nutrition label needed) 

      o  Phase 3: Rank other foods using nutrition labels

      o  Phase 4: Raise awareness and increase knowledge level of HER and SWAP among agency partner staff through external training and other education

      o  Phase 5: Support HER and SWAP ranking and implementation at pantries

      o  Phase 6: Raise awareness around SWAP color coding and nutrition guidelines among neighbors shopping at the Healthy Choice Markets and attending the United Way Demo Cooking Kitchen

• Work with Community Health team to support SWAP/HER knowledge and implementation at Farmacy locations

Secondary activities: Support operations at the Healthy Choice Market and CRC Demonstration Kitchen (up to 40% of their time) 

• Conduct and oversee cooking demos at the United Way Demo Cooking Kitchen as needed to ensure consistent demo classes on the calendar, showcasing the food being distributed that day at the Healthy Choice Market.

• Serve as the Food as Medicine (FAM) dedicated shopper at the CRC Healthy Choice Market for referrals from the Root Cause Coordinator for Healthcare

• Support the Healthy Choice Market team in pantry operations 6 hours per week, including but not limited to:

    - PantryTrak registration

    - Shopping with neighbors

    - Shelf stocking

• Attend weekly team meetings with the Market team

• Ensure that the Healthy Choice Market is stocked with healthy recipes that match its inventory

• Help to oversee demonstration kitchen scheduling and maintenance 

• Attend Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) distributions (Senior Shopping Days) at the Healthy Choice Market to conduct cooking demos showcasing the food being distributed that day.  

Trainings and Events (10% of their time)

• Comply with all AmeriCorps program guidelines by maintaining service hours, training hours, and service projects as outlined in the AmeriCorps Service Agreement.

• Attend all required training courses and staff meetings and participate in AmeriCorps service projects.

• Understand and promote the Mission and Vision of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank that values public service and celebrates the positive aspects of various backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent

• At least 18 years of age

• Ability to pass criminal background check and drug screen

• Working knowledge of Microsoft office software and data entry programs

• Positive and professional written and oral communication skills

• Be comfortable standing/moving for extended periods of time

Preferred Qualifications:

• College degree or other training in nutrition/dietetics

• Highly organized and detail oriented

• Strong interest in working with communities and nutrition.

• Experience and comfort with speaking in front of a group

• Ability to work and communicate with people of a variety of backgrounds and skillsets
