Animal Caretaker

About the Role Animal Caretakers play a vital role in the daily care, cleanliness, and well-being of our shelter animals. You'll work closely with the medical and adoption/foster teams to ensure the animals receive the best possible care in a safe, clean, and positive environment.​

Key Responsibilities:

• Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and other animal areas daily
• Feed, water, and exercise animals according to their specific needs
• Observe animals for signs of illness or behavioral changes and report concerns
• Provide basic hygiene and behavioral care under staff direction
• Support adoption processes and work collaboratively with volunteers
• Maintain daily records in shelter software and assist with inventory restocking
• Assist with general upkeep of the shelter’s appearance and functionality​

Qualifications & Requirements:

• High School diploma or GED/HSE required
• 1–2 years of experience in an animal shelter preferred
• Able to lift 30 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
• Comfortable working outdoors and around animals/products containing peanuts
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Must be professional, courteous, and aligned with the mission of DCSPCA

Working Conditions:

• Frequent bending, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods
• Exposure to animals of various temperaments and outdoor weather conditions
• Use of cleaning agents and disinfectant solutions

Location: Hyde Park, NY

Schedule: Our shelter operates from 8 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week (including holidays) to ensure animals receive daily care. Flexible availability is needed.
