Apprentice Teacher

Position Summary: The Apprentice Teacher is a vital member of the instructional team, working closely with a mentor teacher to support and deliver a content-rich classical education. This role offers the opportunity for hands-on teaching experience, professional development, and collaborative engagement with students, parents, and colleagues. The Apprentice Teacher will independently teach up to three classes, creating and delivering engaging lessons aligned with the school's curriculum and classical pedagogy. Additionally, they will provide support for their mentor teacher by assisting with classroom management, administrative tasks, and individualized student support. The Apprentice Teacher will also serve as a substitute teacher when necessary, assist with school operations, and participate actively in professional development opportunities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Teach independently for no more than three assigned classes, ensuring delivery of engaging and effective lessons aligned with the school's curriculum.

• Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans for assigned classes, adhering to school standards and the classical education model.

• Evaluate and grade student work in a timely and constructive manner, maintaining accurate and transparent records of student progress.

• Communicate effectively with parents regarding student performance, behavior, and progress, fostering positive relationships to support student success.

• Collaborate with and seek guidance from the Head of School and other faculty members to enhance teaching practices and professional growth.

• Attend and actively participate in all professional development sessions and training opportunities designated for faculty to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with school goals.


• Collaborate directly with the teacher(s) to implement a content-rich classical education by following curriculum guidelines and expectations


• Substitute teach when teacher is absent (will be compensated at higher pay rate)


• Assist with classroom "housekeeping" items such as collecting, organizing, and grading students' work and materials, copying worksheets, distributing materials and items, and keeping a tidy classroom


• Build positive relationships with students by checking up on missing work, managing behaviors, executing small group and individual instruction, proctoring tests and evaluations, and meeting all accommodations


• Assist with daily operations of the school, such as supervision of beginning and end of day routines and procedures, lunch and recess times, and other transitional periods


• Be respectfully assertive in guiding and mentoring students, utilizing classical pedagogy methods


• Proctor or supervise tests on the annual testing cycle (beginning of year, middle of year, end of year)


• Proactively identify struggling or advanced students to provide additional support or academic extensions


• Collaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and others


• Maintain confidentiality in student records


• Maintain a collegial, professional relationship with students, parents, and colleagues as a partner in the community of learners


• Fully participate in all required in-service, professional development, and end-of-year wrap-up days, maintaining active engagement and presence throughout.


• Effectively communicate with supervisor and teammates


• Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operations


• Perform other related duties as directed

Position Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds


• Must be able to traverse the classroom and school and adjust one's tone and height by bending or leaning in order to teach each child


• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, or standing to teach


• Must be able to supervise outdoor activities
