The Arkansas Highway Police Patrol Officer, while under immediate supervision, is responsible for the enforcement of state laws regulating the use of public highways with special emphasis on commercial vehicles and private non-passenger transportation vehicles.

The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas Department of Transportation is an "at will" employer.
Minimum Requirements
Education and experience: The educational equivalent to a diploma from an accredited high school.
Physical requirements: Skill at firing a weapon proficiently and consistently as required by department standards. Must be able to lift 100 pounds. Must be able to bend, stoop and climb in and out of vehicles, crawl and slide under vehicles in order to properly conduct inspections. Must be able to pursue, subdue and restrain suspects as well as defend themselves, other officers and innocent third parties from attackers. Must be able to engage in pursuit driving and control a vehicle at high speeds.
Working conditions: Constant in-state travel, shift work, abnormal working hours, on-call duty, and exposure to danger. The wearing of uniforms and firearms as directed.
Licenses, registrations and certifications: Current certification by the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training or the ability to acquire certification within nine months of initial employment. Minimum requirements to achieve certification found in Regulation 1002 of Act 452 of 1975 as amended. A pre-employment drug/alcohol test will be conducted after a contingent offer of employment or internal transfer has been made, and prior to the candidate performing any work for the Department in that capacity. Valid driver’s license.
Ability to successfully complete required North American Standard Level I Inspection Procedure Parts A and B courses in order to conduct motor carrier safety assistance program inspections.
(“Accredited” means the educational institution or program is accredited by an accrediting organization recognized either by the United States Department of Education or by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.)
A criminal background check will be required to determine suitability of employment, and failure to meet these standards may cause the applicant to be rejected or terminated from that position.
This position does not require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge or a bachelor’s degree or higher in the field; thus, this position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship.
