Job Description - Art Director

Position Overview

We’re seeking an Art Director to lead and execute the creative operations across the SMOSH Unscripted channels. This role will be just as much focused on Art Department expertise as it is on production workflow leadership with an emphasis on proactively managing processes, people, and creative operations across SMOSH’s Unscripted channels.

The ideal candidate has full-time digital media experience, previous success managing full-time direct reports, and a strong grounding in art department fundamentals. This role reports to the Production Designer.

Core Competencies

  • Proactive Workflow Leadership — Anticipates needs before they surface, builds efficient systems, and stays ahead of scheduling, art requests, and cross-team dependencies.

  • Accountable Operational Execution — Takes ownership of timelines, budgets, and deliverables; ensures follow-through from concept to final product with consistency and reliability.

  • Creative Problem Solving — Approaches challenges with a solution-first mindset rooted in craft knowledge, producing inventive outcomes that support the medium and production realities.

  • Team-Oriented Communication — Speaks up thoughtfully, collaborates openly, and brings professionalism to interactions; shows up on time, keeps others informed, and supports a positive team environment.

  • Leadership & Development — Guides full-time staff and rotating project hires with clarity, structure, and coaching, ensuring expectations and responsibilities are understood and met.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Art Needs for Unscripted Content — Champion proactive planning and execution of all creative art requirements for SmoshPit, Smosh Games, SmoshCast, and PressALike.

  • Manage & Develop the Art Team — Foster a supportive, team-focused environment by coaching full-time direct reports, providing actionable feedback, and modeling dependable follow-through.

  • Delegate & Manage Art Team Workload — Own team scheduling, task delegation, and prioritization to keep deliverables on time and on budget while maintaining accountability and clarity.

  • Provide Creative Direction — Offer inspired, solution-oriented creative guidance that elevates visual storytelling while aligning with production constraints and resources.

  • Maintain Safety Protocols — Ensure both workshop and on-set work adheres to safe practices, reinforcing responsibility, awareness, and proper use of tools and materials.

  • Coordinate Cross-Department Workflows — Communicate proactively with production, camera, and channel teams, ensuring alignment, transparency, and efficient handoffs from pre-production through wrap.

  • Model & Reinforce Corporate Processes — Lead the team in effectively using and improving existing workflows, including production pipelines and EOS goal-setting

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong grounding in art department and wardrobe fundamentals (Art Direction, Props, Set Dec, Construction, SFX, Wardrobe and HMUA)

  • Multi-disciplinary fabrication familiarity (sewing, foam work, sculpting/modeling, etc.)

  • Working proficiency with fabrication tools (table saw, bandsaw, drill press, power sanders) and excellent safety practices

  • Strong understanding of production workflows (pre, production, post)

  • Working knowledge of production equipment (c-stands, grip, rigging) and basic camera principles

  • 3–4 years full-time in digital media in a senior art, creative, or production role

  • Experience managing full-time direct reports in a fast-paced environment

  • Exceptional organizational and accountability skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Clear, team-oriented communication, including creative feedback and cross-team alignment

  • Proficiency in the Google Suite and overall tech-savviness

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop)

  • Background in drawing, drafting, or 3D modeling a plus

  • Solution-first, creative problem solving

  • Ability to meet deadlines and deliver consistently high-quality work

  • Collaborative, proactive mindset
