Description

Status: Full Time  

Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday or Wednesday – Sunday core; ability to flex from core for occasional evening or weekend programs, museum events, and other staffing needs.

Wages: $23 - $25 Hourly DOQ

The Hands On Children’s Museum is located on the picturesque East Bay waterfront in downtown Olympia. We are a nationally known family learning destination and the most visited children’s museum in the Pacific Northwest, hosting more than 300,000 visitors each year. Our mission is to stimulate curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills through rich, interactive learning experiences. We believe that all children deserve respect and the opportunity to learn, regardless of their ability to pay, which is why the Museum works hard to serve more than one-third of its annual visitation through the Inspired Learning for All initiative. The Museum is recognized as a national Museum for All and won a Noyce Foundation Bright Lights Award for bringing art and science education to underserved populations.

Voted a “Best Place for Kids” for more than a decade, the Museum offers a state-of-the-art LEED Gold facility with 150 indoor exhibits, a half-acre Outdoor Discovery Center, Art Studio, a MakeSpace for tinkering and inventing, café and gift shop, and award-winning education programs including camps, workshops, preschool, parenting classes, field trips, community outreach and family support programs.

Position Overview:

Work for an award-winning Children’s Museum, voted a “Best Place for Kids” for more than a decade! Are you an are an experienced art educator or maker with exceptional customer service skills and a desire to inspire creativity? The Art Studio Coordinator works collaboratively with the Manager On Duty (MOD) and the operations team to provide an exceptional visitor experience during busy days and events. This key position connects our young visitors to the love of art and tinkering in the Museum’s beautiful Art Studio and MakeSpace galleries. Core responsibilities include designing and leading engaging art and tinkering activities for families. You will also prototype projects, acquire, maintain, and organize materials and supplies. 

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in creating and providing educational programming for a high volume of children, including crafts and make-and-take activities.
  • Excellent customer service skills and must be comfortable creating a welcoming learning environment where all visitors feel encouraged to participate in activities.
  • Able to work independently with limited direction in a fast-paced environment with a great deal of flexibility.
  • Excellent initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project coordination skills; multi-tasking and prioritizing.
  • Proficiency in art/science/maker/electronic media preferred.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, including inventory control, supply, and storage management. 
  • Motivated community outreach for donated art materials; WA Driver’s license with no points preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team setting with a high degree of daily communication required. Must care about and value the viewpoints of the other team members and the organizational mission.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred; relevant work experience may substitute.

Specific Job Duties:

  • Opening and closure of Art Studio, oversight, and clean-up throughout the day.
  • Great customer service and models best practices in engagement and educational activity delivery.
  • Works collaboratively to create a calendar of exciting art/maker activities for Art Studio, MakeSpace, Holiday Events, and HOCM After Hours 
  • Tracks stats as needed.
  • Ensures protocols are created and followed for proper child safety practices with educational tools and equipment.
  • Coordinates with the Community Engagement Assistant Manager to schedule the use of shared materials such as technology and maker kits.
  • Maintains Art Studio and      MakeSpace displays.
  • Provides constructive feedback and coaches volunteers and staff in coordination with the Visitor Engagement Manager.
  • Inventories Art Studio and MakeSpace consumables and suggests supply orders.
  • Accepts or rejects Art Studio in-kind donations, sorts, and puts away. If items require prep before Art Studio use, follow through as needed.
  • Creates relationships in the community, works with the Leadership Team, and the Development Department to procure exciting, recycled materials for the Art Studio. Schedules and facilitates recurring pick-up as necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains art media, including silkscreen screens, brushes, paint, clay, etc., for programming
  • Ensure upstairs prep storage, Art Studi,o and MakeSpace closets and cabinets remain clean and organized.
