Job Description - Art Therapist (ATR)

Children's Aid Society is Hiring: Master's Level Art Therapist



We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Art Therapist to join our team. The Art Therapist will work with individuals and groups to provide therapeutic support through the use of creative arts to enhance emotional, mental, and psychological well-being. This role will involve creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can express themselves, explore their emotions, and develop coping strategies through artistic expression.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Conduct individual and group art therapy sessions, tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.

  • Assess clients' emotional, psychological, and developmental needs to develop personalized treatment plans.

  • Use various art forms (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.) to facilitate self-expression and therapeutic exploration.

  • Provide a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to explore difficult emotions and experiences.

  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, and counselors, to provide holistic care.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client progress, treatment plans, and session notes.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy sessions and adjust treatment approaches as necessary.

  • Educate clients and their families about the benefits of art therapy in addressing mental health issues.

  • Participate in supervision, professional development, and continuing education to enhance therapeutic skills and stay current with best practices.



Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Art Therapy, Counseling, or a related field.

  • Certification or licensure as an Art Therapist (e.g., ATR-BC) is preferred but not required.

  • Strong background in art and familiarity with a variety of art techniques.

  • Proven experience in a therapeutic or counseling setting, working with diverse populations (e.g., children, adults, families, or specific groups like trauma survivors, individuals with disabilities, etc.).

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build rapport with clients.

  • Empathetic, patient, and non-judgmental demeanor.

  • Knowledge of ethical and legal standards in the practice of art therapy.



Preferred Skills:



  • Experience working in mental health clinics or schools.

  • Familiarity with other therapeutic modalities or certifications (e.g., CBT, mindfulness, play therapy) is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
