Job Description - ASL Coordinator


Reports To: Supervisor of Early Education Programs

Employment Information: This is a full-time, ten-month union position.

Summary:

The purpose of this position is to provide ASL and ASL Literacy immersion to students to support their development of foundational skills in ASL as well as to provide ASL instruction at community partner schools. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies, ASL, Linguistics, Early Childhood Education, or a related field required.
  • Advanced sign language skills required with native or native-like fluency in ASL as measured by the SCPI (Advanced +) or ASLPI (4+) or other validated measure.
  • Understanding of early childhood developmental milestones.
  • Understanding of Bilingual Educational strategies.
  • Experience with coaching strategies with colleagues and families of deaf/hard of hearing children.
  • Hold current ASLTA certification or obtain within 2 years of employment
  • Experience working with special education individuals 
  • Experience with an interdisciplinary and functional curriculum.
  • Understanding of and experience with a culturally diverse population.
  • Understanding and acceptance of communication principles which emphasize full accessibility to all communication in the school environment, the importance of self-expression and respect for each individual’s communication needs. (See statement of PSD’s Communication Philosophy and Principles.)
  • Experience working as a member of an instructional team is preferred. 

Specific duties:

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and ASL team in developing and implementing ASL/Literacy curriculum.
  • Provide consultative classroom support to ensure accessible communication and language-rich environments for all students.
  • Provide ongoing ASL classes to hearing students at PSD community partner schools
  • Maintain accurate records and provide timely lesson plans and progress reports. 
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop videos, resources, and ASL events that support everyday ASL vocabulary, early learning strategies, and Deaf culture, promoting family engagement and strengthening ASL skills schoolwide.
  • Support Caregiver engagement at Early Childhood events to ensure exposure to American Sign Language and support understanding.
  • Develop weekly online American Sign Language stories to share with caregivers.
  • Serve as a language model for students and staff.
  • Acts as a sign language resource to instructional staff related to language use, variation, technical signs, communication strategies, etc.
  • Support American Sign Language research projects in the Early Childhood Program.
  • Provide PSD community professional development in ASL, Literacy, Deaf Studies and inclusive communication practices
  • Perform additional duties as assigned that align with the promotion of ASL acquisition and engagement.  

Requirements

  • Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Generally work in standard office conditions and climate.
  • Work in a stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied diverse array of contacts.
  • Regularly walk, sit, stand, kneel, crouch, stoop and reach with hands and arms.
  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Willingness to travel
