Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Ultrasound technologists (also known as diagnostic medical sonographers) have the knowledge and responsibility to perform ultrasound examinations utilizing a technology that creates detailed and dynamic images of the body's internal organs using high frequency sound waves.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITES:
Under direct supervision, perform all types of general ultrasound, OB/GYN and small part ultrasound examinations. Assists in the daily operations within the division of ultrasound, as it relates to patient scheduling, patient transportation and routine maintenance of equipment. Will maintain and coordinate the availability of ultrasound services with other services, clinics or other facilities and locations under his/her jurisdiction. Reports to the section Coordinating Manager.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:
Identify patient and explain procedure to them in order to allay anxieties and obtain patient's cooperation during the performance of procedure. Perform ultrasound examinations in accordance with protocol.
Obtain pertinent data to perform ultrasound examinations to document in the final report in the RIS and PACS.
Prepares examination area, ultrasound equipment, supplies and patient. Arrange for proper protection of patients, public and staff from infectious diseases/materials.
Monitors PACS and RIS incomplete worklists to ensure that all exams are completed.
Understand and respond accordingly to patient needs when performing exams on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations.
Maintains regular contact with Radiologist and radiology resident and present verbal and /or documented preliminary reports for their review. (Maintains adequate stocks of supplies and materials needed for use in the department.)
Able to oversee the work of Ultrasound Technologist LV 1 and instruct ultrasound students in routine sonograms and procedures.
Conduct inspections and checks equipment for defects and assures proper use of such equipment through instruction and review.
Report any unexpected patient incidents in accordance with the occurrence report protocol. Maintain and execute all policies as related to safety guidelines
Coordinates the scheduling of exams and communication of results as appropriate.
Maintain basic care of all the ultrasound imaging equipment. All malfunctions are to be reported to management staff whether mechanical, electrical or suspect and service request documentation completed. Maintain a clean and safe work environment for both patients and staff.
Perform other duties as deemed necessary in the event of emergencies or disaster.
Continue professional growth and development of job-related skills on an ongoing basis. Participate in continuing education activities.
Ensure all examinations are accessioned, documented in RIS and all images sent to PACS.
Maintain a professional demeanor and related to patients, physicians, staff and public in an appropriate manner.
In accordance with HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), staff members will exercise due diligence in ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid certification in Sonography issued by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
(ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); and
2. One (1) year of experience as an Ultrasound Technologist
