Job Description - Assessor - Substance Use Disorders

Position Type: Temporary contract, 60 days, with potential for full-time hire



Program Levels: ASAM Level 1 Outpatient and ASAM Level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient



Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Temporary Substance Use Assessor to support our mission-driven team committed to expanding access to high-quality behavioral health care. This role is based in Washington, DC and is an integral part of the substance use treatment program serving clients in ASAM Level 1 and 2.1 The Assessor will be responsible for completing comprehensive assessment packages that include the ASAM multidimensional assessment, SBIRT screening, and an individualized treatment plan. 


Candidates must be comfortable working in an in-office environment, engaging clients professionally, making clinically appropriate level-of-care recommendations, and producing timely, audit-ready documentation.


Contract Terms
This is a 60-day temporary contract position with the possibility of converting to a full-time role based on performance, program needs, census, documentation quality, reliability, and credentialing requirements.



Primary Responsibilities
•    Complete comprehensive substance use assessments for clients entering or continuing care in Level 1 Outpatient and Level 2.1 IOP services.
•    Conduct ASAM-based clinical evaluations using the multidimensional framework to determine client needs, risks, strengths, readiness for change, recovery environment, and appropriate level of care.
•    Complete SBIRT screenings and document results clearly, accurately, and in accordance with program standards.
•    Develop individualized initial treatment plans based on presenting needs, ASAM findings, diagnosis, client goals, and recommended services.
•    Assess substance use history, mental health symptoms, medical considerations, trauma history, legal/social needs, housing stability, recovery supports, and barriers to treatment engagement.
•    Make clinically appropriate recommendations for Level 1, Level 2.1, or alternate levels of care when indicated.
•    Ensure all assessment packages are complete, signed, dated, clinically sound, and submitted within required timelines.
•    Collaborate with clinical leadership, intake staff, counselors, case managers, and administrative staff to support smooth client admission and placement.
•    Maintain compliance with HIPAA, confidentiality standards, ethical guidelines, and applicable District of Columbia behavioral health requirements.
•    Participate in brief case consultation or clinical review as needed.
•    Arrive prepared and available for all scheduled in-office assessment appointments.



Required Qualifications
•    Must be able to independently and accurately complete ASAM, SBIRT, and treatment plan documentation.
•    Experience working with ASAM Level 1 Outpatient and/or ASAM Level 2.1 Intensive
Outpatient populations and completing assessments for substance use treatment programs.
•    Strong understanding of substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, stages of change, relapse risk, recovery planning, and client-centered care.
•    Knowledge of SBIRT, motivational interviewing, person-centered treatment planning, and level-of-care placement.
•    Experience in clinical assessment, diagnosis, service coordination, and behavioral health documentation.


Preferred Credentials
•    Master’s degree in social work, counseling, nursing, or a related behavioral health field.
•    Active or eligible District of Columbia behavioral health or addiction credential, such as:
o    CAC I or CAC II
o    LGPC, LPC
o    LGSW, LICSW
Work Schedule
2-3 days/week of in-office availability between 9a-5pm is expected, and weekly schedules are determined based on program needs.
