The Vermont Office of the Attorney General, Agency of Human Services Legal Unit, has an immediate opening for an energetic and talented full-time Assistant Attorney General who will be responsible for representing the Vermont Department of Health. The Unit consists of two Assistant Attorneys General who work closely with the Department of Health’s General Counsel.
The Attorney General’s Department of Health team provides legal services to all the Department’s many divisions. The attorneys engage with Department leadership and staff daily to advise on public health compliance, enforcement, and Department policies and procedures. Major job responsibilities include risk management, data governance, and privacy. The attorneys also represent the Department of Health in administrative hearings and civil litigation in Vermont civil courts and in interactions with members of the public with complaints or disputes involving the Department. Work will also include reviewing state contracts, grants, and access to public documents requests.
This assistant attorney general position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the Attorney Pay Plan. The State of Vermont offers a benefit package rivaling any employer in Vermont, which includes a top-notch health care plan, generous sick and annual leave, and employer contribution to pension plans.
Candidates must be willing to travel and work independently, but within the structure of a government legal team. Candidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be capable of working as part of a team. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant experience, especially in Vermont, but newly admitted attorneys are welcome to apply. Self-reliance, IT skills, and knowledge of state and federal health law, regulations and policies (such as HIPAA, 45 C.F.R. Part 2, and Vermont privacy laws) are a plus, and a healthcare or public health background will be helpful.
