Assistant Chief Engineer

Job Description - Assistant Chief Engineer

MalaceHR is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer to support the operations of two busy medical office buildings in Baltimore, MD. This is a hands-on leadership position for an engineer who is comfortable both supporting the engineering team and personally performing maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and emergency response.

The Assistant Chief Engineer will work closely with site leadership to ensure all building systems and equipment operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. The successful candidate will have strong commercial building engineering experience, hands-on boiler knowledge, and experience working in medical office, healthcare, or similarly demanding facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and operation of building mechanical and electrical systems.

  • Support the daily operation and maintenance of two high-traffic medical office buildings.

  • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain boilers and associated mechanical equipment.

  • Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and reactive maintenance.

  • Diagnose equipment failures and complete repairs whenever possible rather than relying exclusively on outside contractors.

  • Respond to tenant service requests, equipment issues, alarms, and building emergencies.

  • Participate in the facility's required on-call rotation at least every other week and respond to callbacks as necessary.

  • Assist in supervising, directing, training, and supporting engineers and maintenance personnel.

  • Help establish and maintain preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.

  • Monitor the condition and performance of HVAC, boiler, plumbing, electrical, and other critical building systems.

  • Coordinate and supervise vendors and contractors performing specialized repairs or maintenance.

  • Monitor contractor performance and verify work is completed safely and according to site requirements.

  • Participate in client-facing meetings and communicate building conditions, maintenance concerns, and project updates.

  • Assist with planning building repairs, equipment replacements, and capital improvement projects.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and service documentation.

  • Help ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures, building codes, licensing requirements, and facility standards.

  • Provide technical guidance to engineering staff while remaining actively involved in day-to-day maintenance work.

  • Support emergency response activities and help maintain reliable building operations in a demanding medical environment.

  • Perform additional facilities and engineering duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Maryland 3rd Grade Stationary Engineer License required.

  • Maryland 1st Grade Stationary Engineer License strongly preferred.

  • 5+ years of commercial building engineering, stationary engineering, or facilities maintenance experience preferred.

  • Strong hands-on boiler operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience.

  • Experience supporting commercial HVAC and mechanical systems.

  • Experience working in medical office buildings, healthcare facilities, hospitals, or other high-demand commercial environments strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience as an Assistant Chief Engineer, Lead Engineer, Senior Operating Engineer, Stationary Engineer, or similar position preferred.

  • Ability and willingness to perform hands-on repairs and maintenance while also providing leadership and technical direction.

  • Experience working with preventive and corrective maintenance programs.

  • Ability to respond effectively to emergency service calls and equipment failures.

  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude.

  • Experience coordinating contractors and outside service providers.

  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

  • EPA Universal certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs.

  • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, climb, and work around mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to safely work in mechanical rooms and other building engineering environments.
