Within Charcoalblue, the Theatre Consulting Americas (TCAM) Business Unit provides design consulting in the areas of theatre planning, theatre design, and technical systems design for a variety of project typologies. Our Americas team spans across New York, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Southern California, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

We are seeking a candidate to join our North American Theatre Consultancy team as an Assistant Consultant. The Assistant Consultant will support the design and delivery of Charcoalblue’s Theatre Consulting projects. Our team of Consultants and Directors work across various disciplines including audiovisual, stage engineering, stage lighting, theatre and theatre design. You will work closely with our team and you will receive direct exposure to projects and structured training to develop expertise in theatre consulting. You will also support the development of key partnerships by building relationships with internal teams and external clients.
You will report to one of our senior leaders who will manage your project assignments and workload. You will have the opportunity to meet regularly with your line manager to ensure you receive full support in your role. Additionally, ongoing training and career development will be provided as part of your role and as you grow with the company.
Assist in the design, documentation, and administration of projects from concept to detailed specification.
Support consultants by producing drawings, reports, and technical specifications.
Conduct research on industry innovations, technical developments, and best practices.
Attend client meetings, design workshops, and site visits to gain practical project exposure.
Work with internal design teams to develop holistic solutions balancing functionality and budget.
Support technical feasibility studies and assist in problem-solving for design challenges.
Contribute to discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions within the company.
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Participate in structured learning and development programs.

Experience in technical theatre, architecture, engineering, design, project management, or related field through education, internships, or direct work experience.
Exposure to theatre, live events, or construction-related environments is advantageous.
Familiarity with design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Vectorworks, or similar) is desirable.
Ability to conduct research and apply findings to project work.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective verbal and written communication with different audiences.
Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and a willingness to learn industry-specific tools.
The role is being offered on an 'at will', non-exempt basis at 40 hours per week.
As an international organization, the needs of the business are as such that this role requires a flexibility in working hours (which can be variable from week to week) to facilitate project demands and maintain support across our global entities’ varying time-zones. Working hours patterns will be agreed with your line manager to suit your personal circumstances and the current project load.
The role is subject to a three-month probationary period.
We are currently working in a distributed hybrid model, meaning you will be able to work from your home (or other place of your choosing). Travel within the US and occasional travel internationally for projects and/or team building will also be required, with advanced notice.
Please note, although the role is distributed, the successful applicant must be based in the greater New York, Chicago or Dallas metro areas to allow for in person meetings with your line manager and other Charcoalblue consultants. You should be able and willing to travel to external meetings and our US studios as required, with notice.
Team members have no ‘cap’ on the number of days they wish to take in any one year. This means you can plan holiday or vacation time or request time when you need it, without the worry of running out of leave days. TWYN leave requests must follow policy guidelines and team members are encouraged to use a minimum of 15 days of paid time off per year (prorated in the first year), in addition to federal and some local public holidays.
Charcoalblue traditionally closes its studios between Christmas and New Year’s Day, resulting in an additional 4-5 discretionary paid vacation days each year.
To support you in successful hybrid/distributed working, you will receive a laptop and any other associated IT peripherals required for the role upon you joining Charcoalblue.

Following successful completion of the insurance waiting period, you will be eligible to join our company healthcare plan for the duration of your employment.
Following completion of your three (3) month probationary period, you will receive an allowance for live event tickets each month in line with our policy limits, to keep current with our industry.
Charcoalblue operates a bonus plan which you will benefit from following successful completion of a three (3) month probationary period. Please note that this is subject to the company's performance year-on-year and is not guaranteed.
You will receive regular check-ins with your line manager to enable you to succeed in the role.
Summer 2026
The salary range for this role is 60,000 – 75,000 USD per year.
