Job Description - Assistant Director, Faculty Division

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/FACULTY DIVISION – THE FEDERALIST SOCIETY

The Federalist Society seeks an Assistant Director for its Faculty Division to support and manage existing programs for law faculty and to develop new ways to serve the Society’s Faculty members. The Faculty Division seeks to broaden and deepen discussion among law professors about the character of law and to enhance the understanding of the law in both legal and civil communities. The Division’s programs are designed to foster dialogue among law professors interested in limited government, the separation of powers, and the importance of property rights and free markets to a healthy society. We also strive to promote discussion with critics of these ideas to help all involved learn from each other.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Plan and execute Faculty Division programs designed to support current law faculty.

    • These may include, but are not limited to, an annual Faculty Conference, paper competitions, advisory group meetings, subject matter or scholarship-oriented colloquia, discussion panels, various receptions, and webinars or podcasts.

  • Collaborate with our Practice Groups Division to manage our SCOTUS-related programming.

    • Includes planning and execution of expert-oriented webinars or podcasts on cases pending before SCOTUS (from filing through decision), as well as an annual late-summer Preview Panel focused on the Court’s upcoming term.

    • Involves significant recording, editing, and publishing.

  • Support planning and execution of faculty-related activities at the Society’s annual National Lawyers Convention.

  • Coordinate and facilitate Division efforts to:

    • Meet students and recent graduates with academic promise.

    • Conduct outreach to faculty and potential academics, annotating interests and facilitating relationships.

    • Advise aspiring academics.

    • Coordinate multiple small meetings each month.

  • Plan and execute various Faculty Division programs designed for aspiring academics. These may include, but are not limited to, a variety of in-person, virtual, and/or hybrid workshops and other conferences.

  • Manage Faculty Division Fellowship programs by:

    • Advertising and managing fellowship applications.

    • Corresponding with fellows.

    • Planning and executing programs designed to support fellows in pursuing academic careers.

  • Take the initiative to:

    • Identify opportunities to invite aspiring academics to current Faculty Division and other Federalist Society programs that may be of interest to them, as well as opportunities to interact with them.

    • Propose other programming that will maximize Division impact.

  • Facilitate relationship development with and among students and faculty.

  • Provide for the smooth administration of the Division’s activities by taking on scheduling, travel planning, reimbursement processing, expense tracking, database management, and digital communications / advertising responsibilities.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Bachelor’s degree. J.D. not required, but interest in pursuing a law degree/ PhD is preferred.

  • Strong people skills.

  • Clear and effective communication skills and strong writing ability.

  • Strong organization, event planning, and task management skills.

  • Demonstrated experience taking a project from beginning to end with little direction, communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders throughout.

  • Strong interest in legal ideas and in supporting the work of legal academics.

  • Commitment to limited government, separation of powers, and rule of law.

  • Intensive planning and logistical skills as well as relationship management.

  • Willingness to travel for workshops and events.

  • 1-3 years of experience.

WHO WE ARE:

  • Founded in 1982, the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians dedicated to reforming the current legal order. We are committed to the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.

  • By providing a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with members of the legal profession, the judiciary, law students, academics, and the architects of public policy, the Society has redefined the terms of legal debate.

  • The Society is a membership organization that includes, among other things, Student, Lawyers, and Faculty Divisions. It includes more than 10,000 law students at most of the 196 ABA-accredited law schools as well as 80,000 legal professionals in active chapters in 110 cities.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

We are located in the heart of the District of Columbia, three blocks from the White House and across the street from the Farragut West Metro Station.
