Assistant Director for Inclusion and Belonging

SUMMARY AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Assistant Director for Inclusion and Belonging is a full-time professional staff member. This position assists in the shared management of the Institute for Inclusion and Equity (IIE) and the Office of Student Engagement, with specific focus on programming, education, retention, case management, and on-call duties. This position also acts as a significant support for the Director in the development and implementation of strategies to improve the overall climate around issues of difference for students at the institution. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and implement creative, positive, educational, and social programs for the student body to promote inclusion and enhance community, and a sense of belonging.


• Provide logistical and administrative support to the Director, including the coordination of the day-to-day operations of the IIE space.


• Work collaboratively alongside the Director, and Assistant Director for Student Engagement to plan and execute large-scale, campus wide programming to promote student engagement, success, and retention.


• Assist in the hiring, training, and supervision of the Student Programming Board.


• Support and provide resources for BIPOC, LGBTQ+ students, and other underrepresented student populations.


• Serve as the primary liaison and resource to multicultural student organizations on campus. Such support should include training, leadership development, and retreats as deemed necessary.


• Support religiously-affiliated and spiritually-engaged students by serving as a key resource and connector for students of all faith traditions, spiritual practices, and secular worldviews. This includes support and advising for religious student clubs and organizations.


• Oversee the planning and implementation of the W. R. Crigler Program for Student Success.


• Promote an environment that affirms inclusion, intercultural interaction, and community building activities.


• Assist in managing marketing strategies for the office, including consistent updates to the website, maintaining social media accounts, and promoting events and programs.


• Create and maintain campus partnerships to determine programmatic needs that support inclusion and equity issues on campus.


• Assess current programs and populations regarding inclusivity issues and use those assessments to propose and develop new initiatives with a particular focus on belonging, agency, and retention.


• Enhance educational initiatives and cross-cultural training during New Student Orientation, Student Government Association (SGA) Training and Resident Assistant training, etc.


• Work collaboratively with campus partners in planning, implementing, and evaluating Orientation, Bear Beginnings, Family Weekend, and Homecoming.


• Serve as a case manager and mentor for students with social and cultural challenges as it relates to belonging at Ursinus.


• Serve as a decision-maker for low-level student conduct cases.


• Serve on campus wide committees as needed.


• Participation in events that are scheduled for evenings and/or weekends.


• Serve as a member of the campus Crisis Team on an on-call rotation, responding to emergencies and critical incidents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree in related field required


• At least (1) year of professional experience in student affairs, which may include work experience during graduate school.


• Must be willing and able to reside in provided campus housing as a live-on staff member


• High level understanding of and experience with racial identity, socio-economic identity, religious identity, gender identity, sexual identity, gender expression, ability related identities and other underrepresented student populations


• Experience mentoring, advising, and providing support for multicultural students and student organizations


• An understanding of the residential liberal education setting


• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills


• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications


• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.


• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multi-task


• Many weekend and evening hours are required with this position.
