Assistant Director, Learning Management & Instructional Technology

 

Cairn University is looking to hire an Assistant Director of Learning Management & Instructional Technology to support the University's learning management system, instructional technologies, and online course development.

 

Working under the direction of the Director, this position provides hands-on support to faculty and staff, assists with course design and management, provides training and troubleshooting, and coordinates assigned projects. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with faculty, academic administrators, Information Technology, the Registrar, and other University personnel to support effective online learning and the continued improvement of Cairn Online courses and programs.

Work is performed primarily on campus. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a 30-minute lunch break. Flexible scheduling may be requested by either the employee or the University and is subject to change based on job responsibilities and departmental needs.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Learning Management System and Instructional Technology


  • Assist with the day-to-day administration and management of the University's learning management system.

  • Assist with LMS course creation, organization, enrollment, permissions, settings, and term preparation.

  • Monitor the LMS for issues affecting faculty and students and troubleshoot problems or coordinate resolution with the Director, Information Technology, vendors, or other appropriate personnel.

  • Assist with LMS upgrades, integrations, testing, and implementation of new features.

  • Maintain documentation, guides, and procedures related to the LMS and instructional technologies.

  • Assist in evaluating instructional technology tools and making recommendations to the Director regarding their use.

  • Provide first- and second-level support to faculty, staff, and students regarding the LMS and related instructional technologies.

  • Assist with the administration and support of video, lecture capture, web conferencing, assessment, course authoring, and other instructional technology platforms.


Cairn Online Course Development and Management


  • Assist with the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Cairn Online courses.

  • Develop and assemble online courses in accordance with University standards and established instructional design practices.

  • Work with faculty and course developers throughout the course development process, including learning objectives, course maps, outlines, instructional materials, assignments, activities, assessments, multimedia, and final course preparation.

  • Manage assigned course development projects from planning through launch, communicating timelines and deliverables to faculty and other contributors.

  • Assemble course materials and configure courses within the LMS and related learning technologies.

  • Review online courses for completeness, consistency, functionality, accessibility, and alignment with established University standards.

  • Verify course resources and implement approved updates and revisions in preparation for upcoming terms.

  • Assist with the regular review and maintenance of existing online courses.

  • Identify issues or needed revisions and communicate them to faculty, course developers, or the Director as appropriate.

  • Assist with the development of study guides, quizzes, assessments, multimedia materials, and other online learning resources.

  • Edit and prepare audio and video recordings using appropriate software and platforms.


Faculty Support and Development


  • Provide individual and group support to faculty using the LMS and instructional technologies.

  • Assist in developing and delivering faculty and staff training related to online teaching, instructional design, the LMS, and instructional technologies.

  • Develop tutorials, guides, templates, and other resources to support faculty and staff.

  • Consult with faculty regarding effective use of technology in online, blended, and traditional courses.

  • Assist faculty in resolving technical or instructional technology issues.

  • Communicate technical concepts and procedures clearly to faculty, staff, and students with varying levels of technical proficiency.


Project Management and Departmental Support


  • Manage assigned instructional technology and course development projects according to established timelines and priorities.

  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, student workers, vendors, and other contributors on assigned projects.

  • Monitor project progress and communicate significant issues, delays, or resource needs to the Director.

  • Assist the Director with departmental projects, technology implementations, course development initiatives, training programs, and other University-wide initiatives.

  • Assist with quality control and testing of new courses, LMS changes, integrations, and instructional technology implementations.

  • Assist in maintaining departmental records and documentation related to courses, projects, training, and instructional technologies.

  • Assist with managing and assigning work to student workers and monitoring the quality and completion of assigned tasks.

  • Provide coverage and operational support for departmental functions when the Director is unavailable.


Assessment and Continuous Improvement


  • Assist in gathering and evaluating feedback from faculty and students regarding online courses and instructional technologies.

  • Monitor assigned systems and courses for recurring issues or opportunities for improvement.

  • Assist with the evaluation and implementation of improvements to online courses and instructional technology processes.

  • Maintain appropriate records to support institutional reporting, assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement.

  • Remain current with developments in instructional technology, online education, and instructional design practices.


Other Responsibilities


  • Participate in additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support the overall operations and goals of the University. This may include contributing to cross-functional projects, assisting colleagues, or responding to evolving priorities, even when such tasks fall outside the specific scope of the role.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Abilities


  • Strong knowledge of instructional design and best practices in online, blended, and traditional education.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning management systems and instructional technologies.

  • Ability to learn, administer, and support technology systems used in higher education.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to faculty, staff, and students with varying levels of technical proficiency.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a collaborative team.

  • Proficiency with software applications and technology systems necessary to support University operations and effectively perform job responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of accessibility, copyright, academic integrity, data privacy, and other considerations relevant to online education and instructional technology.

  • Commitment to the integration of sound educational practice and appropriate technology in support of the University's Christian mission.


Required Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, higher education, distance education, information technology, education, or a related field.

  • Minimum of two to three years of experience in instructional technology, instructional design, online education, learning management systems, or a related area, preferably in higher education.

  • Demonstrated experience working with a learning management system and/or developing online courses.

  • Experience providing technology support or training to faculty, staff, or students.


Preferred Education and Experience


  • Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, higher education, distance education, information technology, or a related field.

  • Experience with Moodle or a comparable learning management system.

  • Experience with online course development and instructional design in higher education.

  • Experience with video editing, lecture capture, web conferencing, course authoring, or other instructional technologies.

  • Experience working in a small college or university environment with broad responsibilities across multiple areas.

  • Experience with accreditation or quality standards related to online education.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk while working on a computer, developing online content, managing courses in the learning management system (LMS), and communicating with faculty and students.

  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, mobile devices, and related software applications.

  • Visual and auditory ability to review, edit, and produce digital course materials including video, audio, and multimedia content.

  • Occasional walking and movement across campus to attend meetings, training sessions, or collaborative projects with faculty and staff.

  • Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment, course materials, or office supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • Sustained mental focus and attention to detail required for course design, project management, troubleshooting, and quality control of online educational materials.

  • Capacity to work effectively under deadlines while managing multiple projects and communicating progress to stakeholders.

  • Ability to remain composed and professional while providing support to faculty, staff, and students with varying levels of technical proficiency.

  • Adaptability to evolving educational technologies, LMS updates, and emerging best practices in instructional design and online learning.

  • Flexibility to occasionally work outside of standard business hours to support course launches, training sessions, or system maintenance.
