Job Description Summary:

The Planning, Strategy & Integrative Practices (PSI) team is dedicated to helping all students to seamlessly integrate into the campus community and make the most of all William & Mary has to offer. We focus on enhancing the overall student experience through relationship building, carefully designed programming, and use of data to inform our work. PSI is particularly focused on advancing Student Affairs’ strategic plan and W&M’s inclusive excellence goals.

William & Mary seeks to understand and meet the evolving needs of students by providing data relevant to Student Affairs and campus partners. To accomplish this, the primary responsibility of the Assistant Director of Assessment, reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Planning, Strategy & Integrative Practices and Director of Assessment, is the implementation of a broad range of assessments on the student experience, analysis of data, and reporting of outcomes to a broad range of campus partners for the Division of Student Affairs. This role ensures data accuracy and integrity, interprets trends, documents methods, and provides clear information to support institutional planning, and decision-making. This role will help build capacity around student-centered assessment practices within the division.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. 

  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

  • Proficiency with assessment and statistical software (e.g., Qualtrics, SPSS, R).

  • Experience (typically 1-3 years) of professional experience in assessment, program evaluation, and/or institutional research, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Experience with data reporting to various audiences.

  • Effective presentation and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Assessment experience in student affairs or higher education.

  • Significant professional experience in assessment, program evaluation, and/or institutional research, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to extract, aggregate, and report complex data accurately to audiences with varying levels of data literacy.

  • Experience working with large sets of data records.

  • Experience in outcomes assessment and related activities within a higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a collaborative and transparent manner.

  • Familiarity with FERPA and the handling of sensitive/confidential information.

  • Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS).

  • Knowledge of best practices, current trends, and directions in assessment in higher education.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Conditions of Employment: 

  • Occasional travel, including overnight and weekends, may be required. 

Duties: 

50%- Assessment Management and Implementation:

  • Plan and oversee division-wide assessment data collection and analysis processes, including third-party surveys (e.g., CIRP, Healthy Minds, MSL) and climate studies. 

  • Coordinate and maintain the division’s assessment calendar, survey administration schedule, and communication strategy to reduce survey fatigue and ensure high‑quality participation.

  • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, security, and usability of all assessment data collected within the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using statistical software to identify trends, disparities, and opportunities for program improvement.

  • Conduct ongoing, analysis of student experience data to improve programs and services offered within the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Serve as a consultant to departments by providing guidance and support in developing clear, measurable learning outcomes and engagement indicators for programs, events, and services.

  • Assist AVP for PSI with educating, advising, and assisting internal departmental heads and other division staff in the development and execution of effective assessment plans. 

  • Maintain compliance with the Virginia Records Retention and Disposition Schedule for all relevant assessment records and data sets.

 

40%- Reporting:

  • Interpret data trends and document methodologies to provide clear, evidence‑based insights that support institutional planning and decision‑making across the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Develop, track, and refine key metrics used to evaluate progress toward divisional strategic goals and student success outcomes.

  • Produce reports and visualizations for diverse stakeholders, providing actionable recommendations that drive continuous improvement.

  • Share assessment findings and present reports to relevant stakeholders through a variety of methods, including written reports, oral presentations, data visualizations, digital media platforms, and other data communication tools.

  • Maintain and execute communication plans that keep stakeholders informed about assessment activities, survey initiatives, and institutional progress.

  • Maintain the Assessment section of the Planning, Strategy & Integrative Practices website

 

10%- Other Duties:

  • Coordinate annual reports process from all Student Affairs departments and synthesis into one comprehensive division-wide annual report. 

  • Assist AVP for PSI in collecting and organizing data for SACSCOC and SCHEV reporting and monitor relevant accreditation standards for ongoing compliance.

  • Coordinate the tracking of program improvement efforts to measure the impact of changes implemented over time.

  • Assist in collecting and organizing data for Inclusive Excellence reporting.

  • Serve in the response rotation to CARE concern reports by advising and referring students as needed.

  • Serve on Student Affairs and University committees, as appropriate, to achieve the goals of the position and the Division.

  • Attend relevant student and university-wide events.  

  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary starting at $56,500 to commensurate with experience.
