Job Description - Assistant Director of Athletic Medicine

Duke Athletics is firmly committed to our values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery, and excellence, and to continuing our work to be an equitable and inclusive environment for all. Our collective success within and beyond the competitive arena depends on each community member being and feeling welcomed, respected, and valued. Through continuous education, reflection, humility, and accountability, we strive to develop leaders who embody these ideals.

Be You.

At Duke, we value the unique experiences, perspectives, and passions each member of our community brings. As the Assistant Director of Athletic Medicine, you will play a critical role in supporting the health, performance, and well-being of our NCAA Division I student-athletes—most notably Women’s Basketball—while working in a collaborative, high-performance athletics environment grounded in care, trust, and excellence.

You’ll join a dedicated athletic medicine team that partners closely with coaches, physicians, administrators, and families to ensure our student-athletes can compete, grow, and thrive—on the court and beyond.

Be Bold.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of comprehensive athletic healthcare in a nationally recognized athletics program. You’ll apply your clinical expertise, judgment, and communication skills in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses for NCAA Division I student-athletes, with primary responsibility for Women’s Basketball.

  • Serve as a trusted healthcare resource for student-athletes, coaches, and families by clearly communicating injury status, care plans, and return-to-play decisions.

  • Collaborate with the Duke Athletic Medicine team to deliver integrated, evidence-based care aligned with best practices.

  • Educate and counsel student-athletes on injury prevention, recovery, and overall wellness.

  • Maintain accurate, timely medical documentation and records in compliance with NCAA, institutional, and medical standards.

  • Support additional sports or responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletic Medicine.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Athletic Medicine, Kinesiology, or a related field.

  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).

  • Eligibility for licensure with the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners.

  • Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

  • At least one year of athletic training experience required; three to five years preferred.

  • Experience working with basketball student-athletes strongly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to student-athlete well-being.

Choose Duke.

At Duke University, you’ll be part of an elite athletics and academic community that values innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. We offer a supportive work environment, access to world-class resources, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of student-athletes at the highest level of collegiate competition.
