TITLE: Assistant Director - Region F, Sports and Competition 

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit sports organization offering year-round training and competition in 18 sports to a community of more than 60,000 traditional athletes, Young Athletes, Unified partners, coaches, volunteers, and more. Position Overview

The Assistant Director - Region F, Sports and Competition at Special Olympics Illinois, oversees and manages the organization's year-round sports programs in Region F (inclusive of Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Rock Island, Stark and Warren counties in Illinois), ensuring they align with strategic goals and maintain high standards. This role involves a variety of responsibilities, including managing sports competitions, overseeing funding sources, outreach efforts, and fostering relationships with region coaches, families, staff, and external partners. The Assistant Director - Region F also contributes to the overall success of the organization by monitoring progress, driving results, and ensuring the financial integrity of the program. 

 

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Program Management: Oversees all aspects of Special Olympics Illinois' year-round sports program in Region F, including sports competitions and related activities. 
  • Strategic Goal Achievement: Works with senior leadership to achieve strategic goals.
  • Relationship Management: Builds and maintains strong relationships with Region staff and external partners to ensure policies and procedures are followed and event execution is effective and positive.  
  • Event Support: Assists in planning, organizing, and executing sports events, including managing logistics, volunteer coordination, and communication. 
  • Financial Oversight: Contributes to the monitoring and management of funding sources and financial records related to sports programs. 
  • Outreach and Inclusion: Focuses on reaching underserved populations and promoting the organization's mission of inclusion and equality.
  • Team Leadership: Provides support and guidance to the Director - Region F.
  • Promoting the Mission: Ensures that all activities align with Special Olympics Illinois' core values of acceptance, inclusion, and the power of sports. 

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree: (strongly recommended).
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in event management and volunteer coordination.
  • Knowledge of Special Olympics programs and initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong social media skills is a plus. 

Requirements

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Based in our Region F Office in the Quad Cities with frequent work throughout Region F. Region F covers Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Rock Island, Stark and Warren counties in Illinois. 
  • Reports to: Director - Region F
  • Monday through Friday with frequent evenings and weekends as position demands
  • Independent in-state travel frequently required, including some overnight and weekend travel as an essential function of position
  • Physical mobility required: must be able to climb stairs, assist in setup and breakdown at events, stand or sit for long periods of time, and load and unload vehicles
  • Medium work required, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; requires a good deal of walking, standing, and/or sitting with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls; includes sedentary work
  • Close visual acuity required to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines; operating motor vehicles
  • First Aid/CPR Training and Certification required or willing to obtain within the first six months; must be able and willing to effectively administer First Aid/CPR on-site during events
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance is required
  • Offers of employment are contingent upon clear results of a background check
