Job Description - Assistant Director, Student Health Nutrition

Positional Summary


 


Provide nutrition counseling to students regarding specific health and nutrition needs such as, but not limited to food allergies, dietary changes, disordered eating or eating disorders, weight management, sports performance, mindful and intuitive eating etc. Support healthy lifestyle choices and health maintenance throughout the campus community by serving as the liaison to other departments that have or might have an interest in nutrition education including student RAs. Provide direct supervision for staff clinical dieticians. Assist in creating and implementing campus-wide nutrition and body image initiatives in collaboration with other departments. Provide oversight and possibly contribute to ongoing, accurate nutrition information using current technology/media. Other duties include teaching nutrition related topics to informal groups or in a classroom setting along with design and development of new education initiatives.


 


Key Position Duties


 


Clinical Duties- 65% of Effort



  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments, interpret biochemical and clinical data, and monitor those at nutritional risk, with an emphasis on higher risk conditions such as eating disorders.

  • Make appropriate notations and recommendations in the student’s electronic medical record. 

  • Design, plan, discuss and suggest nutritional/behavioral recommendations to meet nutritional and psychological needs of the student. Modified diets may include but not be limited to treatment plans for those with eating disorders, diabetes, GI concerns, hypertension and weight management.

  • Evaluate effectiveness of nutrition recommendations and modify or revise as needed. 


 


Administrative and Supervisory Duties – 20%



  • Develop an overall plan for nutrition services which supports and aligns with the Mission of Student Health, Wellness and the Student Affairs Wellness goals- update and review as needed



  • Serve as member of the Duke Student Health Leadership Team to provide input and updates on nutrition clinical efforts and outreach.

  • Serve as liaison with other campus entities to develop the pathways for campus outreach.

  • Supervise and provide feedback to staff clinical dieticians and evaluations for the Student Health Director.

  • Provide scorecard and assessment data for administrative review within the department and for Student Affairs.

  • Design and complete quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

  • Develop policies and procedures pertinent for nutrition efforts for AAAHC accreditation.


 


Outreach Efforts/Community Engagement – 10%





    • Participate in university and student organized health events and collaborate with clinical and other campus affiliated groups on preventative healthcare topics.

    • Work with Dining services to assist or direct and Dining/Nutrition initiatives as requested.

    • Develop, organize, participate and assess effectiveness of nutrition-themed health promotion events. 

    • Supervise electronic information distribution: website/social media and mode of communication of nutrition services materials. Ensure accuracy and relevance of information that is on website. 

    • Supervise recruitment and management student interns. 




 


Other- 5% of Effort





    • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, Division and University goals and objectives, as assigned by their Supervisor, Director, or respective designees.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Education  

    • Master’s degree in nutrition



  • Experience

    • Work requires seven years of clinical experience and 2 years of supervisory experience.

    • Must be licensed in the state of North Carolina and Registered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a registered and licensed dietitian.




 


Strongly Preferred Experiences: 



  • Strongly prefer candidate with experience working with college age population, eating disorders, and food allergies 



Preferred Skills and Competencies
 



  • Strong assessment and planning skills, group facilitation and strong writing skills. Well versed and confident in public speaking. 

  • Clinical skills: ability to apply current evidenced-based nutrition recommendations.  

  • Experience with creating and developing social media content 

  • Experience in motivational interviewing or health coaching and non-diet approach to weight management. 

  • Adheres to deadlines and exhibits strong organizational skills 



  • Strong work ethic and passion for the field of nutrition 



  • Supervisory skills 



  • Ability to work effectively as a team member, while also being able to work independently. 



  • Strong listening and communication skills, attention to detail and ability to be flexible.
