California's Labor Agency is looking for a top-notch attorney to join our small legal team.
The Labor & Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) is the cabinet-level executive branch agency that oversees the departments and boards that protect and improve the well-being of California's current and future workforce.
Note that this job is open statewide and may be hybrid, remote, or in-person (if the attorney selected prefers). Responsibilities You'll work closely with the small (5 attorneys including this hire), collaborative legal team within LWDA. The Assistant General Counsel provides advice and counsel to the California Secretary of Labor, General Counsel, and other members of the LWDA executive team on a wide variety of complex and high-profile legal and policy issues. The Assistant General Counsel also provides guidance and oversight to LWDA departments, divisions, and boards, such as the Labor Commissioner's Office and Cal/OSHA within the Department of Industrial Relations, the Employment Development Department, the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, and the California Workforce Development Board on complex and high-profile legal and policy issues. The Assistant General Counsel's work includes a wide variety of substantive fields of law, including labor and employment, government, ethics, and constitutional law. The work includes overseeing high-profile litigation, providing advice on implementation and interpretation of the Labor Code and Unemployment Insurance Code, reviewing proposed regulations, reviewing and overseeing Public Records Act responses, and advising leadership on internal personnel matters. Desirable Qualifications Experience with labor and employment law, government law, or other fields relevant to LWDA's work is helpful; enthusiam for learning is essential. Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Litigation experience, with preference for experience drafting or reviewing significant briefs.
Note that this may be in the capacity of reviewing the work of litigation counsel as a government or in-house counsel. Attention to detail and ability to independently organize and manage work. Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to contribute to a collaborative and collegial team and office. Commitment to LWDA's mission and to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
