Job Summary
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Department Manager in overseeing daily operations within the Meat and Homemade Sausage departments. This role focuses on supporting profitability, customer satisfaction, and the delivery of Mackenthun’s Exceptional Experience. The Assistant Meat Manager will work closely with the team to ensure product quality, inventory management, and customer service excellence. This position has direct reports and provides hands-on support to help achieve department goals and fosters a positive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Assist in training and supervising Meat and Sausage department staff to ensure excellent customer service.
Provide coaching, feedback, and support to help team members meet performance goals.
Maintain morale through effective communication and conflict resolution.
Act as department lead in the absence of the Meat Department Manager.
Financial Responsibilities:
Help achieve departmental financial targets (sales, labor costs, shrinkage, inventory).
Monitor inventory and product turnover, ensuring alignment with sales trends.
Assist in controlling labor costs through efficient scheduling.
Support supplier relationships, ensuring accurate ordering and billing.
Inventory & Product Management:
Assist in ordering, rotating, and merchandising products to maintain freshness.
Perform regular inventory checks and maintain accurate stock records.
Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and proper sanitation.
Keep products well-stocked and presented for customers.
Shrink & Loss Prevention:
Help minimize shrinkage through proper rotation and training.
Track waste and recommend improvements to reduce loss.
Monitor product movement and adjust processes as needed.
Customer Service & Sales:
Provide expert customer service and resolve product issues.
Assist in creating promotional displays and product specials to drive sales.
Help integrate new products based on customer preferences and trends.
Department Development & Leadership:
Stay informed on industry trends and new products.
Encourage staff development and contribute to department growth.
Collaborate in company-wide meetings and strategic planning.
Requirements
Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or GED required. Experience: 1+ year of meat cutting/processing experience; grocery, retail, or food service experience preferred. Skills:
Strong organizational and leadership abilities.
Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
Excellent math skills for inventory, pricing, and budgeting.
Knowledge of safety, sanitation, and food handling.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Capable of lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs and pushing/pulling up to 1500 lbs with a pallet jack.
Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility as needed.
