Research Assistant Professor 

 

The Quillen College of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery. This position is responsible to the Principal Investigator for day-to-day research, including data collection, data analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and documentation in support of NIH-funded grant objectives and research activities. The Research Assistant Professor will be involved in guiding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in their research projects, maintaining animal experimentation, tissue culture, flow cytometry, imaging cytometry, confocal microscopy, and various related research duties as assigned.

ETSU is located in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the beautiful Appalachian Highlands region. The area is characterized by small towns, rich artistic traditions, and lots of outdoor experiences. Asheville is less than an hour’s drive; Knoxville, just 90 minutes. Within 45 minutes of campus, you can hike on the Appalachian Trail and explore the world-famous rhododendron gardens atop Roan Mountain. The mountain streams create recreation opportunities for skiing, boating, and bass fishing on nearby TVA lakes, while the mountain ridges just over the border in western North Carolina offer snow skiing, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just two hours away.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

 

  • Knowledge of research methodologies, study design, data analysis, and scholarly practices within the field

  • Knowledge of research compliance, grant development, and applicable institutional and regulatory requirements. 

  • Strong analytical, scientific writing, communication, and presentation skills. 

  • Ability to develop and conduct independent and collaborative research projects.

  • Ability to contribute to peer-reviewed publications, grant proposals, presentations, and other scholarly activities. 

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary research teams, faculty, students, and external partners.

  • Ability to manage multiple research projects and meet established deadlines. 

  • Ability to mentor students and trainees and contribute to a productive academic research environment. 

 

  

Required Qualifications 

  

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field of study with a minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral training experience.

  • The successful applicant must have relevant experience in small animal experimentation as well as infection and cardiovascular function models.

  • Experience in molecular biology, cellular signaling, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, tissue culture, monocyte/macrophage and endothelial cell functions, IHC, IF, immunoblotting (Western), cell sorting, genetic manipulation of cells, and epigenetics is also required.
