Job Description - Assistant Professor (tenure-track) Department of Political Science and International Relations

Who We Are

The Department of Political Science and International Relations at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie-classified R2 institution in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education, seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) who value its Mission and share its commitment to inclusive excellence and the building of a just society. LMU is a Hispanic‑Serving Institution (HSI), Black‑Serving Institution (BSI), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander‑Serving Institution (AANAPISI), animating servingness for all persons, regardless of identity or beliefs, through its mission and Jesuit, Marymount educational traditions.

Appointment Type and Details

This is a tenure-track faculty appointment. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Political Science by the position start date of August 15, 2027. This full-time, 9-month academic appointment (August – May) has an annual salary paid over 12 consecutive months, allowing for continuous benefits coverage.

Position Responsibilities

The Department of Political Science and International Relations invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Latino politics (with a focus on the U.S. context). The successful candidate is also expected to teach a class on immigration politics.

Faculty responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarship, teaching and advising undergraduate students, and contributing to department and university service. Department tenure-track faculty members typically teach on a two-year 2-2-2-3 course rotation (that is, the teaching load is 2-2 one year and 2-3 the following year) within a 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service model.

Successful candidates will embrace the department’s mission of helping students become informed, analytically reflective, and engaged global citizens. Successful candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student and community populations. We welcome applicants whose work speaks to issues of social justice as well as to antiracist and inclusive pedagogies.

Celebration of Teacher-Scholars

As a Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount university, LMU values faculty who engage students as whole persons and pursue scholarly work that promotes justice, equity, and the Common good. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to LMU’s teacher-scholar model. A teacher-scholar conducts research and does creative work that contributes to the larger body of knowledge while setting an example for the importance of lifelong learning. A teacher-scholar at LMU is dedicated to 1) teaching a diverse student body in a transformative learning environment, 2) developing a thriving portfolio in research/scholarship/creative works and mentoring students, 3) participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels, and 4) working towards greater equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility for all in the profession.
