A well-established construction firm is seeking an experienced Assistant Project Manager to support the planning, execution, and closeout of heavy civil construction projects. This role works closely with the Project Manager across all administrative and technical functions, serving as a key point of contact for owners, subcontractors, and internal teams to keep projects on track, on budget, and in compliance with quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Project Manager across all administrative and technical aspects of assigned projects
Manage project cost control activities including budget forecasting, cost reporting, and subcontract and purchase order negotiations
Assist in the development and ongoing maintenance of the construction schedule, coordinating with the project team and subcontractors to ensure milestones are met
Champion the company's safety program by actively participating in safety training, meetings, and on-site compliance efforts
Monitor workload and staffing levels, providing the PM with proactive analysis and helping resolve manpower challenges as they arise
Serve as a secondary owner contact, maintaining consistent communication on schedules, technical issues, RFIs, change orders, and submittals
Track and manage subcontracts, professional service agreements, purchase orders, and insurance documentation
Assist in preparing and delivering monthly cost reports to management, including forecasting of labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor exposure
Support the development, submission, and tracking of the project QA/QC program
Provide supervision and training to project engineers and co-op students in coordination with the PM
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
5+ years of experience on heavy civil construction projects ranging from $5M to $50M+, with demonstrated experience in an Assistant Project Manager capacity across multiple projects
Thorough understanding of the full construction lifecycle including estimating, plans, and specifications
Strong ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with owners, unions, subcontractors, and internal team members
Extensive experience with project management, cost control, and document control software platforms
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a site vehicle
