Description of Work

The CSS Neuse State Historic Site consists of the CSS Neuse Museum and the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial. The CSS Neuse State Historic Site preserves and interprets the remnants of the CSS Neuse Civil War ironclad gunboat and the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial honors one of Kinston’s most important early citizens, and the first elected Governor of North Carolina. The CSS Neuse museum’s first floor offers visitors valuable insight into Kinston’s location, the ship’s historical significance, sailor life, and the ship’s recovery. The mezzanine level boasts a range of exhibits that showcase the rich history of Lenoir County, including topics such as textiles, mourning, and the Civil War in eastern North Carolina. The Governor Richard Caswell Memorial provides exhibits and artifacts interpreting Governor Caswell and includes the Caswell Cemetery on the property.

• The Manager I serves as the Assistant Site Manager and is responsible for recruitment, selection, supervision, and evaluation of two full-time staff, temporary employees, and volunteers.
• Primary staff member on site for purchasing and budgeting and supervising the financial operations of the site and following department purchasing procedures.
• Conducts tours as part of visitor’s services, gives on-site and off-site presentations, and leads living history demonstrations.
• Assists with special event planning, logistics, and promotions.
• Operates sales desks, greets visitors, and assists with site maintenance at both the CSS Neuse Museum and the Governor Caswell Memorial.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Hires and supervises employees at the site
• Performs clerical and financial duties, primarily responsible for e- procurement for the site
• Conducts tours and programs
• Greets and orients visitors and assists with site maintenance
• Assists with event planning, logistics, and promotion

Recruitment Range: $37,377.00 - $47,155.00

Position/Physical Requirements 

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm, with occasional nights and weekends required during special events, etc. 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

  • Must have the ability to perform light physical activity level - lifting up to 20lbs, with use of arms, legs, exertion of force with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must have the ability to climb a ladder.

Division Description

The CSS Neuse and Governor Richard Caswell Memorial is part of the NC Division of Historic Sites.  The mission of the N.C. Division of Historic Sites and Properties is to preserve, maintain, operate, interpret, and develop those historic properties and attendant historic resources significant to the state’s overall history.  A state historic site is a property of cultural and historical significance to the residents and visitors of North Carolina.  Historic Sites are organized into geographic localities, which serve as a medium for communicating the economic, cultural, and political development of the state. https://historicsites.nc.gov/
