A well-established construction firm is seeking an experienced Assistant Superintendent to support field operations on heavy civil construction projects. Working closely with the Superintendent and Project Manager, this role is responsible for day-to-day coordination of labor, equipment, subcontractors, and site logistics to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee assigned field operations as directed by the Superintendent
Assist the Superintendent in scheduling company labor, equipment, and daily work activities
Coordinate subcontractors on a day-to-day basis to ensure high-quality work output that meets the approved project schedule
Manage the assigned portion of the project budget related to general conditions and site services
Support the Superintendent in developing, documenting, and communicating field work plans and changes
Maintain a thorough understanding of contract documents to anticipate potential issues before they arise, raising concerns with the Superintendent proactively
Obtain or verify that subcontractors have secured all required construction permits
Serve as the primary field safety representative, verifying compliance across all trades and enforcing quality control policies
Participate in regular contractor meetings alongside the Superintendent
Oversee daily reports and field documentation for all assigned work activities
Assist in creating, managing, and updating the project schedule; develop and implement contingency plans when needed
Communicate schedule status, updates, and changes to the project team and trade contractors
Plan, coordinate, and manage all jobsite logistics
Work effectively with labor unions, including managing union labor forces consisting of laborers, operating engineers, and carpenters
Support management of subcontractor labor forces across the project
Ensure compliance with Owner AA/EEO workforce goals and DBE requirements
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
5+ years of experience on heavy civil construction projects ranging from $5M to $50M+, with demonstrated experience in a field engineering role across multiple projects
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, design documents, and technical specifications across all phases of construction
Solid understanding of construction methods, materials, scheduling, and cost control across all divisions of work
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Strong technical and communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively across trades, owners, and internal teams
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a site vehicle
