Job Description - Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach

WHITMAN COLLEGE

POSITION PURPOSE


Support the Head Coach in administering all aspects of the Volleyball Program in alignment with the College’s values and NCAA Division III philosophy. This position reports directly to the Head Volleyball Coach. This position is a 0.48 FTE and works 1000 hours per year. 



PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES


Coaching & Player Development (65%)



  • Teaches fundamental principles and techniques (i.e., competition, traditions and sportsmanship) as well as the philosophy of the sport.

  • Assist the Head Coach in the organization and preparation of practices and in conducting safe and strategic individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies.

  • Help develop and implement game plans, reports, strategies and on-field duties as assigned.

  • Assist in film breakdown and analysis of team matches as well as opponent’s films.

  • Serve as a mentor, teacher, leader and role model to student-athletes.


Recruitment (10%)



  • Support the Head Coach in the development and incorporation of a comprehensive recruiting plan that demonstrates successful results for the recruitment, yield and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.


Team Operations (10%)



  • Assist with the arrangement and supervision of transportation, lodging and meals in conjunction with off-campus competition. Work with the team to ensure representation of the College, while off-campus, is at the highest level.


Outreach & Representation (5%)



  • Coordinate team, alumni and community outreach and events.

  • Represent the College and its athletics program with honesty, integrity and sportsmanship at all times to various institutional programs and students, parents, the general public, alumni and external agencies.

  • Develop positive, professional relationships with officials, league personnel, coaching colleagues and administrative staff.


Compliance & Safety (5%)



  • Comprehend, understand and work within the parameters of Whitman College, the NWC and NCAA Division III philosophy and rules.

  • Is proactive pertaining to all aspects of safety, including injury prevention, risk management, and the proper use of facilities and equipment. Maintains a safe and inclusive environment for student-athletes by identifying potential hazards, modeling best practices, and ensuring timely reporting of accidents or concerns.

  • Responsible for 40 hours of game management responsibilities as assigned by the Event Management Director.


Evolving Responsibilities (5%)



  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and the Director of Athletics.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES


Must be able to explain and/or demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Specifically,



  • Ability to effectively teach and coach students in both an individual and team setting.

  • Ability to attend all practices, matches, team events, camps, clinics, academy, including domestic travel.

  • Ability to execute the physical activities required to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Comfort and confidence with recruiting, practice and training modes, competitive strategies, film analysis and social media.

  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Mac operating systems.

  • Ability to use Front Rush to organize and track communication and status updates.

  • Ability to advance the College's core values of diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism and access. 

  • Ability to successfully articulate the values of a liberal arts education and the role intercollegiate athletics plays in the development of student athletes.

  • Ability to provide individual academic and athletic feedback and guidance to student-athletes.

  • Ability to provide a positive environment and be a positive role-model for student-athletes. 

  • Ability to coordinate transportation, lodging and meals with off campus travel. 

  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable NCAA Division III and Conference rules as they apply to the sport.

  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • Bachelor’s degree OR a combination of relevant education, training and experience.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet one of the following criteria: be at least 18 years old with 2 years of driving experience and complete a driver improvement course, OR be at least 19 with 3 years of experience and successfully pass a motor vehicle report (MVR) check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Experience coaching at the college level, or equivalent significant high school/club coaching experience.  

  • 2+ years of successful coaching experience. 

  • Desire to pursue a career in coaching or athletics at the high school or college level.

WORKING CONDITIONS



  • This position may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.

  • This position requires the ability to perform physical activities essential to its responsibilities, including but not limited to: regular standing, sitting, and mobility; frequent walking, running, and reaching; occasional throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying of items up to 50 lbs.; frequent keyboard use; and other physical tasks as needed to carry out the essential functions of the role.
