Job Summary
Teach undergraduate courses primarily within the Chemistry curriculum, advise students, and perform other duties as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics.
- Develops, instructs, and administers courses primarily within the Chemistry curriculum (24-27 semester credit hours annually). Teaches labs associated with most courses
- Teaching assignments will primarily be in Organic Chemistry and closely related physical science courses depending on departmental needs and the faculty member’s expertise
- Experience with NMR, FTIR, HPLC, or GC/mass spectrometry is preferred
- Prepares syllabi, course assessments, and engaging learning experiences; administers and grades assessments
- Performs related duties such as advising students on academic curricula and advising student organizations
- Serves on faculty committees or task forces as assignment
- Actively participates in University, community, and church projects consistent with the University’s Core Values
- Commits to a biblical perspective, consistent with the Howard Payne University mission and core values as a Christ-centered community
- Commits to intellectual curiosity and the joy of learning, evidenced by ongoing professional development
- Works effectively with other HPU and School of Science and Mathematics personnel
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise student employees in chemistry courses; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies; addressing complaints and resolving problems as needed.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed above satisfactorily and other duties as assigned. - Education and/or Experience – A master’s degree or 18+ graduate-level hours in chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related physical science field is required; a Ph.D. is preferred
- Language Skills - Ability to read, write, and converse effectively in English in order to follow the University’s Administrative Policies and safely perform the essential duties of the job. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors
- Mathematical Skills - Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis
- Reasoning Ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
- Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a good working knowledge of Brightspace software, commonly used Internet browsers and Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word software
- Licenses - Must be at least 21 years old and maintain a current Texas driver's license to drive any vehicle, including personal vehicles, on behalf of the University when necessary
