Job Description - Associate Costume Director

The Associate Costume Director provides creative, technical and supervisory support in costume technology for the Theater Program's productions during the academic year and for the summer theater program of Language Schools.

This is a part time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $21.27 - $26.60 per hour. The standard hours for this position is 26.5 hours per week.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Executes or supervises the execution of costumes for departmental productions.
  • Teaches and provides academic support for costume tech lab sessions (THEA0116B, THEA0210, THEA0220) and student costume technicians.
  • Measures, cuts, constructs, and alters costumes for departmental productions and Summer Language Schools.
  • Provides costume management of show budgets, purchasing, inventory, and recordkeeping.
  • Provides costume support for J-Term musical, Summer Language Schools Plays, Performing Arts Series theatre guest artists, and student independent projects.
  • Interviews, teaches, and supervises student workers. Assists in managing loans, rentals, and maintaining stage costume collection.
  • Maintains costume facilities and equipment in Seeler Theater and Wright Memorial Theater for use and safe operation.  
  • BA or BFA Degree preferred.
  • A valid driver's license required.
  • Three years professional costume or fashion experience and at least five years experience in patterning, draping, cutting, stitching, altering and fitting garments.
  • Experience in managing schedules, personnel, and purchasing. Knowledge of standard costume shop practices and skills.
  • Experience in professional pattern making, stitching and crafts.
  • Experience in fitting and altering costumes.
  • Experience teaching and supervising students.
  • Experience in equipment and facility maintenance.
  • Experience in google suite and adobe suite programs.
  • Must have ability to work flexible schedule. Requires evening and weekend work as needed to support productions.
  • Supervisory experience and/or teaching experience helpful.  

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Position requires the ability to lift and move heavy objects; climb ladders;work at heights; valid driver's license. Working conditions include dust, sharp objects, cleaning materials, paint spraying, bright lights, loud sounds, mulitiple staircase, small spaces, and storage spaces inhabited by rodents.
