The Associate Director, Mechanical & Energy Systems provides strategic and operational leadership for William & Mary’s mechanical infrastructure, overseeing the Building Automation Systems (BAS), Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and Utilities departments within Facilities Operations. This position ensures these critical areas operate cohesively, efficiently, and sustainably in support of the university’s mission. The Associate Director will drive initiatives to optimize energy efficiency, enhance system reliability, and foster collaboration between technical teams. This includes leading efforts to integrate mechanical systems, improve preventative maintenance programs, support capital renewal planning, and coordinate with campus partners to ensure optimal environmental conditions in all university facilities.Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, facilities management, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced experience (typically 5 years) managing HVAC, BAS, or utilities operations in a large or complex facility environment.
Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary technical teams and establish collaborative departmental relationships.
Strong understanding of mechanical and control systems, including energy management and building automation technologies.
Demonstrated knowledge of preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and system diagnostics.
Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with CMMS and BAS software platforms.
Knowledge of Siemens, Johnson Controls, or comparable BAS platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education or institutional facilities management.
Familiarity with sustainability frameworks (LEED, ASHRAE, etc.) and energy reporting standards.
Experience in capital project planning and mechanical system commissioning.
Conditions of Employment:
Must maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with university vehicle use policies.
May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays to respond to campus emergencies or critical system issues.
This is an essential personnel position, required to report during university closures or emergency conditions.
Must be able to work in mechanical spaces, confined areas, and environments with varying temperatures and noise levels.
Duties:
30% Leadership & Departmental Cohesion:
Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and strategic direction for the BAS, HVAC, and Utilities teams.
Lead cross-departmental collaboration and alignment to create a unified mechanical and energy operations model.
Establish clear communication protocols and promote teamwork across disciplines to ensure coordinated service delivery.
Develop and manage performance goals, metrics, and cross-training opportunities to build a cohesive, high-performing team.
Champion a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement within all mechanical and energy service areas.
25% Operations & Systems Management:
Provide strategic leadership of campuswide operations, maintenance, and repair of BAS platforms, HVAC systems, and chilled water and steam distribution networks.
Ensure systems are operated efficiently, with minimal downtime and maximum occupant comfort.
Review preventive maintenance programs, ensuring schedules are data-driven and aligned with system life cycles.
Lead efforts to optimize BAS performance, including sequencing, scheduling, trend analysis, and fault detection.
Support technical troubleshooting and provide engineering guidance on complex mechanical system challenges.
20% Energy Efficiency & Sustainability:
Partner with the Office of Sustainability and Energy Management to identify, design, plan, and implement energy conservation and performance improvement projects.
Monitor and analyze energy consumption trends, developing strategies to reduce usage and carbon footprint.
Support campus sustainability goals through enhanced equipment efficiency, smart controls, and proactive maintenance practices.
Recommend and assist in implementing new technologies that improve system automation, reliability, and energy performance.
15% Utilities Oversight:
Lead the operation and maintenance of campus utility systems including steam, chilled water, potable water, and natural gas distribution.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
Maintain accurate metering, usage reporting, and coordination with utility providers.
Collaborate with The Office of the University Architect on utility infrastructure projects and long-term capital planning.
10% Administration & Coordination:
Develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, and operational forecasts.
Participate in strategic planning, capital renewal prioritization, and deferred maintenance analysis.
Coordinate closely with other Facilities Operations leaders to ensure integrated service delivery across maintenance, controls, and utility functions.
Oversee contractor performance, ensuring compliance with W&M standards and procurement policies.
Maintain thorough documentation of system configurations, performance metrics, and maintenance activities.
Posting Range: $75,000- $93,800 commensurate with experience
