Associate Director of Career Mentoring

Position Overview

The Associate Director of Career Mentoring leads the university-wide implementation of Career Mentoring for All, advancing Butler’s commitment to ensure every student benefits from meaningful career mentoring throughout their undergraduate experience. The positions builds and sustains a scalable mentoring model that helps students develop career readiness, build professional networks, connect academic and experiential learning to their goals and prepare for life after Butler.

Working across colleges and divisions, the Associate Director leads the network of Career Mentors and College-Based Career Mentor Leads. The position ensures a consistent, high-quality student experience while supporting appropriate college-level adaption and building the capacity of those delivering career mentoring across the University.

Responsibilities

• Lead university-wide implementation of Career Mentoring for All, establishing the framework, standards, milestones, and practices necessary to provide students with meaningful career mentoring throughout their Butler experience.
• Lead, supervise, and develop the Career Mentor team, establishing clear expectations and share practices, providing coaching and professional development, monitoring performance and capacity, and ensuring Career Mentors effectively support students and the College-Based Career Mentor Leads in delivering the university-wide model.
• Lead and convene the University and Career Mentoring Council and support College-Based Career Leads, establishing shared expectations; providing tools, training and ongoing support, facilitation collaboration and problem-solving while helping colleges and mentors adapt the university model to their students, disciplines, and professional pathways.
• Design and continuously strengthen the student career mentoring experience, ensuring mentoring helps students develop career readiness, professional identity, networks, and confidence while preparing them to successful transition from Butler to employment, graduate/professional education, or other post-graduate career opportunities.
• Connect career mentoring to Butler’s broader student experiences, collaborating with academic advising and experiential learning opportunities so students can translate their experiences into skills, professional materials, and career direction.
• Develop and sustain a robust network of career mentors, partnering with Alumni Relations, employers, and other internal and external partners to recruit, prepare, engage, recognize, and retain mentors who reflect the range of students interests and career pathways.
• Build and manage the infrastructure necessary to deliver Career Mentoring for All at scale, including student and mentor preparation, matching processes, technology, communication, resources, and operational practices to support an effective and consistent experience.
• Assess the effectiveness and outcomes of Career Mentoring for all, using quantitative and qualitative data to identify gaps, improve the student and mentor experience, inform decision-making, and demonstrate the initiative’s contribution to career readiness and post-graduate success.
• Build a university-wide culture of career mentoring, engaging students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, and other partners in understanding the value of career mentoring and their role in preparing students for meaningful lives and careers. 
   

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Organizational Leadership, Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or related field.
• Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in career development, student success, higher education, mentoring, experiential learning, alumni engagement, workforce development, or a related area, including experience leading significant programs or initiatives.
• Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, and developing staff and building effective teams.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships, facilitate collaboration, and influence across organizational boundaries and among stakeholders with differing roles and perspectives.
• Strong program and project management skills, including the ability to translate strategic goals into sustainable practices and manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use data and feedback to assess effectiveness, identify opportunities, and improve programs and experiences.
• Commitment to creating high-quality and equitable experiences that support students with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and career pathways. 
   

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree preferred
• Experience managing mentoring, volunteer, alumni engagement, or student success programs.
• Experience administering mentoring software, CRM systems, or student engagement platforms.
• Knowledge of career development, student success, retention, and workforce readiness practices.
• Experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers.
