Job Description - Associate Director, Res Planning & Dev - Thoracic Head & Neck Med Onc

Associate Director, Research Planning and Development opportunity in the Thoracic Head & Neck Medical Oncology department.

The ideal candidate must have a bachelor's degree in science or a medically related field, business, or healthcare administration and five years of experience in an academic research setting facilitating research program development and management of research resources including two years of supervisory/management experience.

Candidates with experience in pre- and post-award management, scientific program development, and programmatic oversight of large-scale grants and projects at MD Anderson or another academic institution are ideal. Familiarity with regulations related to NIH and DOD grant requirements is preferred as well as knowledge related to financial management of sponsored programs.

Research Planning & Strategic Leadership

Provide clinical research study conduct information and recommendations to the Department Chair & Faculty Section Chiefs regarding the development, evaluation, and revision of policies and procedures for the prioritization of clinical research activities.

Provide advice and resource information for long-term strategic planning of clinical research initiatives, including options, directions, funding sources, and study conduct feasibility.

Liaise across the institution on clinical research operations efficiencies with particular influence on partnering on initiatives that improve "cradle to grave" clinical research operations methods and strategies.

Collaborate with physicians and staff both internally and externally, as well as being a driver for industry collaborations.

Facilitate plans and resources to monitor & improve compliance consistency and integration of department goals for the conduct/operations for studies.

Serve as resource to identify internal and external funding opportunities and coordinate departmental response, as needed.

Perform project analyses and evaluate resources, outcomes, and obstacles to successful project completion.

Lead efforts to develop methodologies to manage business aspects of all sponsored clinical trials and the integration of lab studies (financial & operational areas).

Develop, implement & evaluate staffing models.

Serve as liaison between investigators, institutional officials, and external sponsor agency officials.

Participate & lead when appropriate, departmental and institutional working groups & committees including but not limited to: THNMO Executive Committee, Lung Service Line working groups, Faculty Clinical and Scientific protocol meetings, weekly clinical trial activation timeline meetings and faculty meetings.

Serve as Risk Manager to direct and manage, (SI) safety intelligence reported events related to Clinical research personnel in collaboration with institutional governing bodies.

Collaborate with Pre award/Post award Directors to integrate nursing operations (TMC and HALs) with dept wide business functions. Implement QuickBase workflow methodologies, implement sound staffing models, monitor workloads and provide measured work volumes to Section Chiefs and Department Leaders.

Research Administration

Plan and ensure that strategic and tactical plans for the research activities are developed and executed effectively and efficiently across clinical research operational teams.

Ensure clinical research activities are aligned with strategic priorities.

Direct the ongoing development and presentation of the clinical research strategic, operating, and staffing plans, both long- and short-term, as needed to assure achievement of defined outcomes and targets.

Ensure budget/finance allocations ($3.6M per year) are on target for appropriate clinical research and cancer project staffing models.

Create, implement, review and report on business development plans, ensuring the strategic objectives are carried out by the clinical research staff.

Develop and lead the business development activities in identifying, managing and implementing new collaborative opportunities with potential partners (e.g. pharmaceutical companies).

Partner and advise Institution Faculty leaders about HAL integration for clinical research initiatives.

Partner with department & institution colleagues (clinic, laboratory, pharmacy, CTRC. regulatory, finance etc) to achieve operational coordination with focus on research nursing objectives.

Collaborate with Finance, Regulatory, and QA officials to define best practices and implement certification and compliance as applicable.

Evaluate emerging technology, make recommendations to the Chair and Department Administrator, and negotiate with producing corporations to bring or make available new technologies and services.

Direct Pre-Award Grants Administration

Oversee clinical research study conduct and related compliance activities.

Direct onboarding for new pre-award team members and development of scientific project team.

Direct pre-award administrator, coordinator and analyst support services for grant submission portfolio for THNMO.

Develop short and long-range projections and research plans, maintain appropriate analyses and make adjustments as appropriate.

Direct supervision for pre-award staff (currently 3+ personnel).

Conduct grants administrator and coordinator hiring and oversee all other development and training for pre-award staff.

Coordinate human resources planning and activities for personnel to include personnel research activities, determining selection standards and processes and hiring activities.

Responsible for staffing and development of the administrative, operational, technical and administrative staff work force.

Develop metrics to measure and report upon research outcomes for experimental and/or new research initiatives.

Oversee communication with sponsors, governing bodies, patients, their families, physicians etc.

Develop and enforce healthcare policy compliance.

Develops research strategy and research programs in collaboration with departmental and extramural faculty (research retreat, strategic planning and strategic goals of department).

Manages the effective operation of multiple grants and large scale projects for the Department Chair and Department Administrator.

Develops and manages research activities for the department including grant submissions for both the Thoracic and Head and Neck sections

Ensures that strategic and tactical plans for ongoing research activities are developed and executed efficiently. Develops and monitors the implementation of systems, policies and procedures related to clinical and translational research protocols and grant proposals.

Establishes collaborative relationships with institutional, departmental and extramural faculty and staff to assure advancement of organizational and departmental goals, programs and projects. Acts a liaison to extramural providers including drug companies, community physicians and institutions.

Responsible for the oversight of the development and implementation of multi-institutional consortium networks and the policies/procedures necessary for a successful collaboration including implementation of clinical trials, regulatory compliance and quality assurance mechanisms.

Ensures systems, policies and procedures are in place to facilitate collaborations. Coordinates strategies to enhance collaboration between MDACC investigators and extramural investigators.

Develops and provides formal and informal education on administrative, quality and operational requirements.

Assists in writing grant applications and developing grant sections as needed for use in future proposals

Establishes performance and productivity standards for staff. Ensures the appropriate and maximum utilization of team personnel, providing timely and ongoing performance feedback in order to maintain required standards and achieve stated goals. Coaches and counsels employees and, when required, implements the disciplinary process within institutional guidelines.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree in science or medically related field, business or healthcare administration.

Preferred: Master's degree in science or medically related field, business or healthcare administration.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Five years experience in an academic research setting facilitating research program development and management of research resources to include two years of supervisory/management experience. With preferred degree, three years of required experience to include two years of supervisory/management experience.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Preferred: Experience in pre- and post-award management, scientific program development, and programmatic oversight of large-scale grants and projects at MD Anderson or another academic institution are ideal. Familiarity with regulations related to NIH and DOD grant requirements is preferred as well as knowledge related to financial management of sponsored programs.
