Job Description - Associate Director, Residential Experience and Housing Operations

Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL), within the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Maryland, provides advising, programming, and comprehensive support to the fraternity and sorority community. DFSL supports over 50 chapters across four governing councils: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and Panhellenic Association (PHA). The department also manages 21 University-owned chapter houses that provide a live-in residential experience and dedicated program space for chapter members. DFSL is supported by a team of 35 full-time and student staff members and serves as the primary liaison between the fraternity and sorority community, their alumni, and University administration.

The Associate Director of Residential Experience and Housing Operations provides senior leadership for fraternity and sorority housing within the department. This role oversees housing operations for university-owned chapter houses, residential experience strategy, house corporation relations, and summer camps and conference housing. The Associate Director sets strategic direction, ensures alignment with divisional priorities, and collaborates with campus partners to support risk management, student safety, and emergency preparedness.

The position serves as the functional lead for facility operations, partnering with Residential Facilities staff to coordinate facilities management and ensure fraternity and sorority residential environments are maintained efficiently, effectively, and equitably. The Associate Director supervises two direct reports and leads efforts to deliver a safe, high-quality residential experience that promotes student learning, well-being, and community success.

Preferences:
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience managing complex operations, including housing operations, leasing, facilities management, or residential programs.
- Direct experience with fraternity and sorority housing at a large, diverse, public institution.
- Demonstrated success in enhancing residential communities and advancing student development.
- Experience collaborating with alumni boards, inter/national fraternal organizations, and senior university leadership.
- Strong skills in organization management, policy development, and stakeholder engagement.

Physical Demands:
Work is conducted in both office settings and at chapter houses and requires the ability to travel throughout campus. The position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers and keyboards, and to conduct chapter house walkthroughs and inspections. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry small parcels, packages, and other items; walk short distances; and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. Occasional work outside of regular business hours may be required to support meetings, training, or other departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in housing, residence hall, or student affairs management. Three (3) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of best practices in administration and organization.
Knowledge of revenue and expense tracking and fiscal records maintenance.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
